Southeastern wins two relays at Nike Nationals

Hamilton Southeastern track runners made a tremendous impact on the national stage last week.

Two Southeastern Track Club relay teams won their respective events at the Nike Outdoor Nationals & USATF U20 Championships, which took place June 19 to 22 in Eugene, Ore. Another relay finished as runner-up, with Southeastern also earning top 10 finishes in two other races.

Both victories came on Friday, June 20. The first winner was the girls 1600 sprint medley team. Chloe Senefeld, Addison Smith, Anissa Lammie and Ciara Kepner finished that race in 3 minutes, 58.51 seconds. Later that afternoon, the Royals won the mixed 4×400 relay. Christian Ortiz, Senefeld, Jaxson Wanza and Lammie ran that event in 3:27.65.

On Sunday, June 22, HSE’s 4×400 relay placed second in a time of 3:44.65. That team also consisted of Senefeld, Smith, Lammie and Kepner.

Ortiz was the top individual placer for Southeastern, taking fifth in the boys 200 dash (21.24 seconds). Senefeld finished ninth in the girls 400 hurdles (1:00.75). Elia Blackmore took 12th in the girls 100 hurdles prelims, clocking in at 14.38 seconds. She placed 16th in the championship but improved her time finishing in 14.31 seconds.

Lammie competed in the girls 400 dash, placing 15th with a time of 55.60 seconds. Kepner took 40th in the girls 800 run, clocking in at 2:15.73.

Liam Powers competed in two long-distance boys Emerging Elite races. Powers finished 11th in the 3000-meter run, with a time of 8:36.49. He also ran in the 5000-meter run, placing 44th in 15:50.32.

Other schools

Carmel had four runners compete in the Nike Nationals. Ellie Cooley placed 18th in the girls Emerging Elite discus, with a top throw of 124 feet, 4 inches. Hayden Bearden ran in two Emerging Elite boys events; placing 18th in the 400 hurdles (56.19) and 51st in the 400 dash (50.59). Cameron Kelley was 26th in the boys long jump, with a best jump of 20 feet, 7.25 inches.

Westfield’s Alivia Lozier competed in the girls 5000 meter run. She placed 13th in a time of 17:29.02.

Carmel well-represented at New Balance Nationals

While the Nike Nationals were taking place out west, several Hamilton County runners were participating in the New Balance Nationals Outdoor at the University of Pennsylvania. That event also took place June 19 to 22.

Carmel was well-represented at the meet. Larkin Taylor placed 36th in the one-mile race (4:52.02), with Annabel Pollert finishing 48th in the mile (4:53.65). Pollert also competed in the two-mile race, placing 36th (10:44.01).

Larkin and Taylor also ran in the 1500-meter enroute championship. Larkin finished 39th (4:33.06) while Pollert was 58th (4:34.89). Pollert later raced in the 3000-meter enroute championship, finishing in 30th (9:57.60).

Logan Navarro took 26th in the boys freshman discus, with a best throw of 134 feet, 6 inches. The Greyhounds finished 59th in the boys 4×100 relay. The team of Andrew Moss, Beau Snarr, Josh Ott and Isaac Nelson clocked in at 42.74 seconds. Carmel’s 4×800 relay team of Cooper Szotek, Josh Cale, Garrett Fuller and Michael Delaney placed 81st, in 8:40.57.

Other schools

Hamilton Heights’ Waverly Woolever took seventh in the girls high jump. Her best leap was 5 feet, 7.25 inches.

Hamilton Southeastern’s KJ Mallett placed 24th in the boys freshman discus. His top throw was 134 feet, 9 inches.

Westfield’s Mackenna Condon placed 78th in the girls freshman mile, clocking in at 5:21.65.

Fishers eighth-grader Noah Haviza competed in the middle school 800 run. He finished 136th in a time of 2:15.18.
