INDIANAPOLIS – The IHSAA boys track & field state meet returned to Indianapolis on Friday, and the runners certainly put on a show.

The student-athletes competing at North Central’s Track & Field complex set six new state records during the meet, which took place at the home of the Panthers for the first time since 1997. Lawrence North won the team trophy, holding off runner-up Bloomington North by two points, 47-45. Merrillville was third with 40 points.

Hamilton County teams held their own against the fast performances and took home several medals. Leading the way was Fishers: the defending state champion Tigers totaled 24 points, good for eighth place.

Fishers earned medals in four events. Senior Sam Quagliaroli took second place in the 3200 run, clocking in at 8 minutes, 54.99 seconds. The Indiana University recruit bettered his regional time by over four seconds. The only man faster was Westview junior Noah Bontrager, who ran away with the race in 8:51.22. It was Bontrager’s second win of the evening, after he cruised to victory in the 1600 in a state-record time of 4:02.60.

“We just let it rip those last two laps,” said Quagliaroli. “I felt like I was in a good spot, and then Noah just got me with 300 (meters) left. That kid’s a beast. Hats off to him.”

Tigers junior Konrad Hayden soared to third place in the high jump, clearing 6 feet, 8 inches. Hayden was flawless in his first four attempts, with no misses until he tried for 6-10.

“I’m honestly just happy to be here and be a part of my team and do my best,” said Hayden.

Jev Hutton placed fifth in the discus, while Fishers began the meet with a sixth-place finish in the 4×800 relay. The runners in that race were Reece Torres, Bryson Slagle, Dylan Wolf and Declan Mohr.

Noblesville started its meet off solid, finishing as runner-up in the 4×800. Banner Barnes, Bradyn Livingston, Isaiah Vohs and Jack Strong ran that event in 7:39.20; Bloomington South won in a new record time of 7:37.01. Westfield also got a top-four finish in the 4×8, with Maxim Poirier, Will Snedeker, Ty Conner and Caleb Haney finishing in 7:42.70, a new Shamrocks school record.

Snedeker and Livingston provided some fireworks in the open 800 run. Starting from the first heat (slow heat), Snedeker won in 1:54.24, while Livingston placed second in 1:55.11. Both those times were good enough to reach the podium after the second heat: Snedeker ultimately finished fifth and Livingston was ninth. It was the second medal of the night for both men.

“My coaches told me I had to win this heat by the most I could to get on that podium, and I put my heart out there,” said Snedeker. “And thankfully it came to fruition.”

“This is my last race as a Noblesville Miller, so I just wanted to try and do my best,” said Livingston.

Westfield also medaled in the 4×100 relay, giving the Rocks three medals. Caleb Terril, Cayden Gearhart, Cato June and Maison McCray placed seventh.

Hamilton Southeastern picked up three medals, including two for Christian Ortiz. He finished fifth in the 400 dash, clocking in 48.15 seconds, then joined Jaxson Wanza, Deacon Lewis and Mason Schmitz to place fifth in the 4×400 relay.

Liam Powers added another point for the Royals, finishing ninth in the 3200 run.

Carmel’s Isaac Nelson placed fourth in the 100 dash, scoring four points for the Greyhounds. His time was 10.51 seconds, just 0.11 seconds behind first place in another fast race.
