Roger D. Long, 81, Fishers, passed away at home after a two-year battle with cancer.
He was a retired sales engineer and partner in Frank W. Gill and Associates where he worked for 45 years. Although his parents never moved, he went to five different grade schools in Washington Township before graduating from Broad Ripple High School in 1961. He was a member of the ATO fraternity at Rose Polytechnic Institute of Technologies (now Rose-Hulman) and graduated in 1965 with BS in mechanical engineering. His first job after graduation was in Process Engineering at Delco-Remy in Anderson, Ind., where he designed a composite battery grid that is still in use today in automotive lead acid batteries.
His lifelong interests were private flying and antique motorcycles. He had an instrument rating and flew all over the country in his Navion airplane. Roger restored many antique Indian motorcycles and hundreds of old motorcycle horns. He was a past president of the Midwest Chapter of the American Navion Society and involved in many motorcycle clubs.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Martha; father, Ralph; sister, Roberta Hensley; and his wife, Sandie. He is survived by his partner of 10 years, Edna Carey Eshelman; brothers, Wayne and Ronald; sister, Rosalind; children, Julie Johnson and Mike Long; and three grandchildren.
