Excitement (and toilet paper) was in the air at Sheridan Public Library (SPL) during the recent STEAM Celebration.

Professor Steve kicked off the event by presenting his “Unseen Forces” show in front a crowd that was ready for fun. This comedy show had all ages engaged and eager to learn about science.

Professor Steve and Elissa Dee, the children’s librarian, talked with the kids about how they, too, can be scientists by studying the world around them, asking questions, and being problem solvers.

To encourage this, Dee was thrilled to show off the new Grab and Go STEAM collection that contains over 30 kits that cover a variety of topics related to Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, or Math. These kits are available to check out for one week at a time with one automatic renewal and can be placed on hold by visiting the following link: Sheridan STEAM Kit Catalog.

The collection of kits was made possible through a grant from Science Kits for Public Libraries (SKPL), a division of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). As a recipient of an additional donation through SKPL from the Sander family, SPL was able to purchase a larger collection.

A longtime member of SKPL, Bernie Sander, always wanted to make a difference and knew the importance of all children having access to high quality STEAM learning experiences. When he passed away last year, his family knew they wanted to donate to SKPL in his honor.

SPL welcomed the Sanders family to the celebration and they were happy to be a part of the kick off. Toni, Bernie’s wife, spoke at the event and said, “I know Bernie was here and I could hear him say, go make a difference.”

SPL believes these kits will truly make a difference to the kids of Sheridan as well.
