November 22, 1937 – August 24, 2024
Rita A. Jones (Olinger), a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and Registered Nurse (RN), passed away peacefully at the age of 86 on Saturday, August 24, 2024, surrounded by her loving family.
Born on November 22, 1937, in Evansville, Ind., Rita was the eldest of seven children born to Emil and Alice (Laake) Olinger. She grew up in Ferdinand, Ind., where she developed a love for basketball and a deep commitment to her siblings. Her caring nature guided her to a career in nursing, which she pursued with dedication. Rita graduated from St. Mary’s Nursing School in Evansville and received a BS from her life’s work, solidifying her calling as a Registered Nurse (RN).
In 1960, Rita married Wayne Jones in Ferdinand. They shared 59 years of marriage and together raised five children: Tony (Linda), Lori (Tony), Weston, Benjamin (Kristie), and Bryant (Lori). Rita’s nurturing spirit extended beyond her own family, as she also played a significant role in raising her nephew, John Paul Olinger (Leah). Rita was deeply involved in her children’s lives, attending countless band performances, choir recitals, dance shows, football games, baseball matches, and wrestling tournaments. Her home was a haven of support, advocacy, and unconditional love.
Rita’s professional life was marked by more than 40 years with over 20 years of service at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis, followed by a decade managing and consulting for long-term care facilities, and another 10 years at St. Paul’s Hermitage in Beech Grove. She also had the honor of serving on the Indiana State Board of Infectious Diseases. Nursing was not just her profession – it was her passion and life’s purpose.
Beyond her career, Rita was an active and joyful member of her community. For 45 years, Rita delighted the community by playing Mrs. Santa Claus in the Indianapolis area. She loved playing cards, particularly bridge and euchre, and was deeply devoted to her Catholic faith. Her daily prayers, especially the rosary, were a source of strength and comfort. She also enjoyed the occasional visit to the casino and treasured the time spent with family and friends.
Rita is survived by her children, Tony (Linda), Lori (Tony), Weston, Benjamin (Kristie), and Bryant Jones (Lori); her nephew, John Paul Olinger (Leah); her sister, Mary Will of Evansville; her brothers, Steve Olinger of Ferdinand, and Tom Olinger of Danville, Calif.; and 10 cherished grandchildren, Sami, Cobi, Lexi, and Quinton Petrucciani; Peyton and Bryce Jones; Grant and Makenna Jones; and Lucy and Lance Jones.
Rita’s legacy is one of kindness, strength, and selflessness, leaving a lasting impact on all who knew her. Her life was a testament to love, compassion, and unwavering dedication to family, faith, and friends.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Rita’s memory to a charity of your choice or a local nursing organization, honoring her lifelong commitment to caring for others.
