University’s boys won their sixth consecutive game Tuesday night scoring a come from behind 57-49 win over Bishop Chatard at The U Center.
The Trailblazers trailed by seven points at halftime and did not take their first lead until three minutes remained in the game. University outscored Bishop Chatard 15-4 over the last four minutes of the game.
Senior Montgomery Holland and junior Max McComb each had 17 points to lead the Blazers. McComb had team highs with 13 rebounds and five assists and also blocked four shots. Holland pulled down nine rebounds and also had four blocked shots.
As a team University blocked a school record 13 shots, a performance that ranks as the fifth highest total in Indiana high school history per the Hickory Husker Book of Indiana High School Basketball Records compiled by Leigh Evans. Blake Gray also had four blocked shots and Bryce Gray added one block.
The contest was tight throughout. The score was within two possessions for all but 1:50 and the final score was the largest lead of the night.
The score was tied three times in the opening quarter, with Bishop Chatard taking a lead at 13-11 with 2:07 left on an Ethan Roseman basket. The Trojans led 16-12 after the opening period. Blake Gray and McComb each had five points for University with Cash Moore making two three pointers for Bishop Chatard.
The Trailblazers pulled within 19-18 on a Holland three pointer, but the Trojans scored the next five points to open up a 24-18 lead and took their largest lead of the night to the halftime locker room at 28-21.
University started climbing back into the contest in the third quarter. Holland scored twice to cut the lead to 28-25. Blake Gray scored and Holland split a pair of foul shots to cut the Bishop Chatard lead to 30-28. After a Trojans basket University pulled within one when McComb made a three pointer from the right corner. A Holland basket and a pair of Bryce Gray foul shots had University within 36-35.
Three straight Trailblazer possession came up entry allowing Chatard to score for a 38-35 lead and the Trojans led 40-37 after three. Holland had nine points in the third period.
University continued to struggle to get over the top early in the fourth. Holland scored University’s first five points in the final period before Robert Russell finally pulled the Blazers even at 44 with 3:47 left. Russell’s runner in the lane with 3:00 left spun around the rim before falling in to give University their first lead of the game at 46-44.
Roseman tied the game with 2:35 left on a pair of free throws before McComb put the Trailblazers ahead to stay with 2:17 left at 48-46. McComb added a rebound basket and two foul shots to give University a 52-46 lead with 1:07 left. Bryce Gray scored off an assist from Blake Gray before Bryce Gray and Russell added foul shots to close out the scoring.
Blake Gray had nine points and Russell scored six of his seven points in the final quarter.
Roseman led Bishop Chatard with 16 points, 14 in the second half.
University improves to 9-6 on the season while the Trojans fall to 7-7. University is next in action Saturday afternoon hosing Class 3A No. 14 Heritage Christian. Varsity tipoff is at 2:30 p.m.
