The Carmel boys swim team took care of business in the sectional finals last Saturday, which could mean more celebrating this Saturday.

The Greyhounds won their own sectional championship, the final event to take place at Carmel’s current pool, as work is being done on a new natatorium to open this fall. The ‘Hounds closed down their old facility in style, scoring 588 team points to win their 17th consecutive sectional title and 37th in program history.

Carmel won all 11 of the swimming events, all under their respective state cut time. The Greyhounds qualified 13 more swims to this weekend’s IHSAA state finals with cut times, advancing 24 of their 27 swims. The other three swims just missed the cut, but there’s a high chance they could receive callbacks to state. (Callbacks were announced last Sunday, after press time.)

“We’ll see how it all shakes out,” said Carmel coach Chris Plumb. “We did a great job today and we’re definitely looking forward to next week.”

The Greyhounds are nine-time defending state champions and are aiming to take that streak into double digits at this weekend’s state finals.

Senior Gregg Enoch had a splendid day, winning two individual events. He set a new sectional record of 1 minute, 47.51 seconds in claiming the individual medley, then powered to victory in the 500 freestyle, clocking in at 4:26.13. Andrew Shackell was also a double winner, taking first in the 50 free and butterfly.

Other Carmel winners were Lewis Zhang in the 200 free, freshman William Allen in the 100 free, Anderson Kopp in the backstroke and Michael Gorey in the breaststroke. The Greyhounds swept all three relays: Kopp, Brandon Malicki, Shackell and William Pugh won the medley; Emile Haig, Allen, Malicki and Enoch were first in the 200 free relay and Lewis Zhang, Enoch, Ethan Zhang and Carter Hadley won the 400 free relay.

“Any time people are going best times, we celebrate it,” said Plumb. “It’s their personal world record and I love that.”

Carmel qualifiers by cut time were Ethan Zhang in the 200 free, Gorey and Brian Qian in the IM, Malicki and Allen in the 50 free, Haig in the butterfly, Hadley and Ethan Zhang in the 100 free, Lewis Zhang and Kopp in the 500 free, Carson Szotek and Hadley in the backstroke and Malicki in the breaststroke. Connor Sweeney and Henry Summer placed third and fourth respectively in the diving and will compete in the Homestead regional on Tuesday.

Noblesville placed second as a team with 401 points. The Millers’ Aiden Kless was the diving winner, scoring 453.10 points and also advancing to the regional. Senior Graham Kulp qualified for state in the IM with a cut time, and joined Anthony Mathis, Zak Armstrong and Sean Halvorsen to qualify by time in the medley relay. Several other Noblesville times could receive callbacks as well.

Westfield scored 331 points to finish third. The Shamrocks finished the meet with a bang, as their 400 free relay team of Zach Welch, Garreth Thomas, Luca Barbosa and Bennett Morse placed second with a state cut time.

Guerin Catholic finished fifth with 150 team points. Senior Drew Wilhite placed fourth in the 50 free, and was also on the Golden Eagles’ fourth-place 400 free relay team with Sam Holl, Charlie Jurewicz and Will Ladine. Westfield and Guerin Catholic could get callbacks as well.
