Baseball: Westfield, GC get season-opening wins

The Westfield baseball team opened its season Monday with an 8-0 win over North Central at Grand Park.
The Shamrocks scored their first run in the second inning, when Evan Russ hit a sacrifice fly to send Mac Clarke home. Westfield then added three more runs in the third inning; Collin Lindsey blasted a two-run home run, also scoring Brayden Hibler. Trey Dorton’s right field sacrifice fly scored Keaton Mahan.
The ‘Rocks put four more runs on the board in the sixth inning. Maximus Webster led off with a triple, then scored when Russ reached on error. Russ then stole home plate during the next at-bat. Later, Ty Anderson scored when Mahan drew a bases-loaded walk, then Luke Starr scored on a wild pitch.
Webster finished the game 2-for-4 at the plate. Jacob Culp threw four innings for the win, tossing nine strikeouts and against just two hits. Andrew Nicholson and Kade Robinson allowed no hits in relief.
Westfield is scheduled to open its Hoosier Crossroads Conference season tonight at Franklin Central.

Guerin Catholic also got off to a winning start, beating Frankton 5-2 in a Tuesday away game.
The Golden Eagles got on the board in the second inning with two runs. AJ Nunley hit an RBI double to score Bryson Dorsey, then Ryan Zimmerman went home on an RBI groundout from Anthony Ferrucci.
Guerin Catholic then added one run in each of the next three innings. In the third, Adam Novelen led off with a double, then eventually scored on a passed ball. Nunley got home in the fourth inning when Ferrucci hit a sacrifice fly. In the fifth inning, Novelen hit a leadoff single, then scored when Davis Wagner batted him in with a base hit.
Novelen finished 2-for-3. Clay Patton pitched two and a third innings for the win, striking out six.
The Golden Eagles play their home opener Friday against Monroe Central.

Sheridan dropped a 9-6 season-opener to Indianapolis Kings Homeschool Tuesday in a home game.
The Blackhawks took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning when Dayne Voege and Zach Bales scored after Cole Macintosh reached on error. But the Kings came back, scoring five runs during the fifth and sixth innings for a 5-2 lead.
Sheridan cut that lead to 5-4 with two runs in the sixth inning. Nathan Henshaw singled on to base, then moved to third when Spencer hit a double. Evan Grinstead reached on error to score Henshaw, then Spencer got home on an RBI groundout from David Will.
The Kings poured in four runs in the top of the seventh to lead 9-4. The ‘Hawks got two of those runs back in the bottom of the inning, after Macintosh and Silas DeVaney scored on separate errors, but a strikeout finished the game.
Bales, Henshaw and Spencer each had two hits. Sebastian Salazar pitched five innings, throwing 14 strikeouts.
Sheridan is off until April 12, when it plays at Clinton Prairie in a Hoosier Heartland Conference game.

University hosted Harrison in a scrimmage at Grand Park on Tuesday, with the Raiders finishing on top 8-7 after making a comeback in the later innings.
University jumped ahead 2-0 in the second inning, with Owen Schellhase scoring on an RBI groundout by Sam Woodward, and Brady Redman getting home on Grayson Knight’s RBI fielder’s choice. The ‘Blazers then put up two more runs each in the third and fourth innings.
In the third, Thomas Price singled in Gabe Mervis and Zane Kampmeier for two RBIs. Then in the fourth inning, Weber Morse got home on a passed ball, and Schellhase was sent home by Redman’s RBI single.
The Raiders began their comeback in the top of the sixth inning by scoring three runs. University got a run back in the bottom of the sixth when Price scored on a passed ball. But Harrison got a home run and three triples in the seventh inning, which led to five runs.
Price was 3-for-3 at the plate, while Redman had two hits.
University opens its season this weekend with a trip to Tennessee. The Trailblazers play two games Friday at Unionville, first against Friendship Christian at 12:30 p.m., then Forrest at 2:30 p.m.

Carmel dropped a tough opener to Zionsville on Tuesday, falling 1-0.
The Eagles scored their run in the fourth inning on an RBI single. The Greyhounds had four players get one hit each: Nathan MacLaren, Hunter Snow, Griffin Wolf and Case Sullivan. Noah Bradbury threw four strikeouts.
Carmel is off until April 9, when it plays a doubleheader at Penn.
