American Senior Communities & U.S. Attorney’s Office partner to educate on elder fraud

American Senior Communities (ASC) has partnered with the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Indiana to present a series of educational sessions on how seniors can avoid scams and fraud.

The series kicks off from 2 to 4 p.m. on Monday, April 22 at The Commons on Meridian, an ASC assisted living community at 8549 N. Meridian St.

Elder fraud is the act of exploiting older adults for monetary gain, such as financial fraud or identity theft. Fraudsters take advantage of seniors through numerous fear-based tactics. By posing as grandchildren or romantic interests, or emailing about bogus investment opportunities, over $5.9 billion in losses occur each year among the senior population. Elder fraud can have devastating effects not only financially, but emotionally as well.

Assistant United States Attorney Adam Eakman will be presenting on common scams, how to identify and recover from them, and who to contact if someone believes they may be a victim of fraud. This event is free and open to the public and media.
