Softball: Huskies, Golden Eagles split early-week games

Hamilton Heights rebounded from a tough Monday loss to pick up a Hoosier Conference East Division win on Tuesday.

The Huskies won at Northwestern 4-2. The Tigers scored a run in the bottom of the third inning, but Heights added two runs in the top of the fourth. Isabel Morrow’s right field base hit scored Lily Roush and Kaylee Rhoton.

Morrow struck again in the sixth inning, blasting a triple right field to again score Rhoton. Morrow later got home on an error.

Lily Cash threw a complete game, tossing eight strikeouts.

Heights fell to Yorktown 10-0 on Monday. Kassidy Schakel had the Huskies’ lone hit.

Heights is 3-2 in division play and 9-5 overall, and hosts Northwestern this afternoon to complete the division series.

Guerin Catholic also split a pair of games to start the week.

On Monday, the Golden Eagles beat Warren Central 12-4 at home, breaking out of a tight game with seven runs in the sixth inning. Lilli Everts got Guerin Catholic on the board in the second inning, scoring after Lauren Brady reached on error. In the third inning, Everts hit a sacrifice fly to score Anna Mauch.

The Golden Eagles put up three runs in the fourth inning. Lucy Kemp’s left field hit brought Hannah Abbott home, then Mauch hit a single to score Kemp and Lauren Brady.

Things opened up for GC in the sixth inning, when a 5-4 lead became a 12-4 victory. Kemp scored the inning’s first run after Mauch reached on error. Kate Brady singled in Mauch, then Natalie Eiler scored on Everts’ RBI groundout. Grace Zirkelbach’s right field hit brought in Kate Brady. Lauren Brady and Zirkelbach scored after Kemp reached on error, then Madi Cain finished the scoring by going home on a passed ball.

Lauren Brady was 3-for-5 at the plate, while Kemp hit a triple as one of her two hits. Eiler also had two hits, and got the pitching win.

Guerin Catholic lost to Lafayette Central Catholic on Tuesday 16-2 in five innings. The Golden Eagles scored both of their runs in the third inning. Lainey Rott got home on Kemp’s sacrifice fly, and Mauch singled in Lauren Brady.

Mauch and Everts both had two hits.

Guerin Catholic is 2-7 and plays Friday at Carmel.

Sheridan dropped a 21-1 Hoosier Heartland Conference game to Clinton Central on Tuesday.

The Blackhawks scored their run in the fifth inning when Emma Settles stole home plate. Settles had led off the inning with a single, then moved to third base on Shelby Eaton’s single.

Maelei Casler hit a double, while Jacquellynne Bates and Mariana Lopez both had one hit.

Sheridan is 1-11 and plays this afternoon at Covenant Christian.
