On Wednesday, Nov. 4, Democratic candidate for Indiana Treasurer of State Coumba Kebe conceded to incumbent Daniel Elliott and released the following statement.

A few moments ago, I called Daniel Elliott to congratulate him on his victory, and I wished him well as he continues to serve as our State Treasurer. I asked him to promise that he will put partisan politics aside and put Hoosiers first. Because this campaign was never about me. It was always about you.

I am proud of the historic turnout across this state, and across the country, but I am most proud of the voters who put people over party – the independents and lifelong Republicans who decided that good leadership, accountability, and their families’ futures mattered more than any political label.

Four years ago, this seat was decided by more than 20 points. People told us there was no way we could cut that margin. But, together, we flipped the script. Together, we brought attention to an overlooked office. Together, we earned the respect and kind words of leaders on both sides of the aisle. And together, we battled a heavily favored incumbent into one of the tightest Treasurer’s races our state has seen in decades.

So while the final numbers didn’t end up in our favor, don’t let anyone tell you that your vote doesn’t count. You sent an unmistakable message that transparency and honest leadership are not partisan issues.

And I want to be completely clear about one thing: I stand by every single thing we did on this journey. We didn’t compromise our values. We didn’t play political games. I ran this race as my authentic self – unapologetically – and that is exactly how I am coming to you now: with my head high, proud of every word we spoke, every hand we shook, and every dollar we raised with integrity.

Indiana, Election Day may be over, but our work is far from finished. This is not the end of our fight – it is only the beginning of my journey to serve the people of this state. And to every voter and every child watching at home across Indiana: do not let these results discourage you.

It does not matter what you look like. It does not matter where you come from. And it certainly does not matter what people say about your name. You belong in the rooms where decisions are made. You can be a leader in this great state.

Thank you for your faith, thank you for your trust, and God bless the great state of Indiana.
