This summer, Sheridan Community Schools (SCS) has been hard at work to prepare for this upcoming school year. From renovations, cleaning, and hiring, SCS administration, teachers, and staff have been putting on the finishing touches before students return Wednesday, Aug. 5.

Mundy

“This has been one of the busiest summers we’ve had,” SCS Superintendent Dave Mundy said. “Thanks to the dedication of our staff and the continued support of our community, we’re ready to provide incredible opportunities to every student.”

Particularly, there have been major renovations, especially at Sheridan High School (SHS) and Middle School (SMS). These updates will help provide a space for every student to excel. New roofs have been installed on both buildings, an updated Career and Technical Education (CTE) space has been completed, the middle school office spaces have been renovated for better usage, and a new collaborative learning space, titled the “Blackhawk Nest,” has been created directly off of the cafeteria.

Davis

“These new facilities are fantastic!” SHS & SMS Principal Rick Davis said. “We can’t wait for students to return and put them to use. It is an exciting time to be a Blackhawk!”

Sheridan Elementary School (SES) has also received its own upgrades: freshly painted hallways, new carpeting, replaced concrete, refreshed landscaping, and a complete deep clean. All these upgrades are due to the maintenance and custodial staff as well as the grounds crews.

Roberts

“Our facilities have never looked better,” SES Principal Valerie Roberts said. “This summer everyone really worked hard to reflect our commitment to an environment that allows our students to thrive.”

This summer there have also been several leadership updates. Davis will serve as both SMS and SHS principal this upcoming school year. Jason Marer will continue to serve as SHS Assistant Principal. Kent Davis will take over as SCS Transportation Director. New hire, Jeremy Luna, will serve as Dean of SMS.

Other hiring updates are as follows:

  • Jaron Howard – SES STEM/SOAR
  • Erica Hills – SES Nurse
  • Brooke Topper – 5th Grade
  • Taylor Jones (maternity leave) – 4th grade
  • Dylan Claypool – SMS Special Education
  • Jackie Donathen – 7th Grade Science
  • Kathryn Dunphy – SMS STEM
  • Abby Huffman – 7th Grade English
  • Brett Zachary – NHCA Alternative Program
  • Ashlynn Green – High School Social Studies
  • Natalie Guest – High School English
  • Nick Popejoy – Grounds Manager

On Monday, Aug. 3, students and families can visit their new classrooms and meet their teachers. From 5 to 7 p.m. the community can gather at the SHS Track and Football Field for the annual Back to School Bash. From 5 to 6 p.m. SES families can visit with their students’ teachers, and from 6 to 7 p.m. SMS and SHS families can do the same.

The people of SCS have put in a lot of work to ensure that every Blackhawk will have the opportunity for success when they walk through the doors every day.
