Greyhounds swept by Roncalli in state semifinals

The Carmel boys volleyball team was swept by No. 1-ranked Roncalli in the IHSAA state semifinals, which took place Saturday, May 30 at Lawrence North.

The set scores were 25-13, 25-20, 25-20. The Royals never trailed during the first two sets. The No. 1-ranked Greyhounds made an early run in the third set, leading 11-6. Eli Philistin-Lynch hit three kills during that time.

Roncalli took its first lead of the set at 17-16 and won eight of the next 11 points to secure the win. The Royals would go on to beat Cathedral in the state championship match.

Philistin-Lynch led Carmel’s offense with eight kills, while Shepard Spidel dished out 21 assists. Thomas Kuehl collected nine digs, with Jett Burke scooping up eight digs. Jack Kovac had five block assists and Spidel made four block assists.

Carmel finished the season 28-6 and was making its first-ever appearance in the IHSAA-sanctioned state finals.
