SHERIDAN – The Sheridan girls basketball team is presently 9-1 for the season, so the Blackhawks have proven they can win.

This week, Sheridan is proving its toughness in a different way. The Blackhawks are in the middle of a busy stretch, with four games in three nights at Larry Hobbs Gymnasium. But Sheridan is still winning big: the Class 2A ‘Hawks took down 3A Tri-West 68-49 on Tuesday, then came back to beat Tipton 55-18 on Wednesday.

On top of the multiple games, the Blackhawks were also preparing for finals, which take place today and Friday.

“So, not only do they have the physical and mental load of basketball, but they also have a mental load of having to show up for finals and do good on those,” said Sheridan coach Jaidlin Bradshaw. “They’ve done a great job.”

The ‘Hawks got off to a great start Tuesday against Tri-West, leading 26-13 after the first quarter. Senior Kenzie Garner was on fire in that quarter, draining four 3-pointers on her way to 14 points. Cecilia Timme helped out with six points.

Sheridan led 38-24 at halftime, with Garner hitting two more triples. The Blackhawks’ defense took over in the third period, outscoring the Bruins 16-6 and giving the home team a 54-30 lead.

Garner finished the game with 28 points, making seven 3s. She was one of four Sheridan players to reach double figures: Shelby Eaton scored 13, Timme added 12 and Nova Cross totaled 10, including a pair of 3s.

The Blackhawks continued to roll Wednesday against Tipton, leading 15-4 after the opening quarter and 27-6 at halftime. Garner scored 10 first-half points, while Eaton scoring six.

Eaton scored another four points in the third quarter, including a rebound basket that gave the ‘Hawks a 46-11 lead and instituted a running clock with just over a minute to go in the quarter. Mackenzie Smith also had four points in the third.

Eaton and Smith both come off the bench, and Bradshaw said it’s “so nice to be able to sub and just have a spark off the bench” for Sheridan.

“What we bring in off the bench, we don’t lose anything, right?” said Bradshaw. “So, they come in and they bring a different look, but we’re not losing anything. It’s awesome. The hustle plays that we get from Mac and Shelby, the rebounding, the jumping on the floor, just those little things.”

Garner and Eaton both tied for high-scoring honors with 12 points each, while Smith scored 10. Cross had eight points, making two 3s.

Sheridan finishes its busy week on Friday with a Hoosier Heartland Conference doubleheader at home, playing Eastern at 6 p.m. The boys game follows at 7:30 p.m.
