Public participates in pickaxe party for Sheridan’s new Art Alley

Sheridan Main Street, Inc. and the Town of Sheridan officially broke ground on the new Art Alley that is set to be completed in November. This highly anticipated project is happening due to all of the donors, supporters, and residents of Sheridan.

Sheridan Main Street, Inc. President Cynthia Keever welcomed attendees and shared how the project came to life through the support of the Creating Places grant. The mural will be created by artists from the Herron School of Art and Design, led by mural artist and Sheridan’s own Melinda Spear-Huff.

Town Council President Si DeVaney thanked the community and those that supported the initiative. He shared how this vision of a revitalized Main Street came to life four years ago.

Spear-Huff, along with Lance Pruitt of Basile Center for Art, Design, and Public Life at the Herron School of Art, as well as Lucas Chesney of Banning Engineering, shared how the alley will come to life through the mural that will stretch the length of the alley and the concrete paving project. Garrett Gossard of Sheridan’s Redevelopment Committee shared how the funding will take place.

Following the remarks, attendees took part in the “groundbreaking” as each individual got the chance to remove the existing asphalt through a special pickaxe. Those that are interested in seeing the progress and early look of the alley can through the “Take a Peek” section of the Sheridan Main Street, Inc.’s Facebook page. The mural is expected to be completed by mid-August with extra additions such as arches, benches, signs, and gardens completed by November.

This Art Alley is only happening through the support of the Sheridan community. This addition shows how the Town of Sheridan and Sheridan Main Street, Inc. is celebrating and creating a space that celebrates art and community as the revitalization of Sheridan Main Street continues.
