Velma Jean Brattain, known fondly to those closest to her as “Gigi,” was a compassionate soul born on September 21, 1939, in Lee County, Va. She lived a dedicated life filled with love, generosity, and support for others. On July 13, 2026, Velma peacefully transitioned from this life at her residence in Noblesville. Her life was a testament to the beauty of selfless service and love, and her legacy will forever remain in the hearts of those she touched.
Velma’s life was anchored by the love she shared with her late husband, Walter Brattain, whom she married on June 26, 1959. Together, they discovered the joys of life, traveling in their youth and creating beautiful memories. Her dedication shone brightly in her 38-year tenure at the Noblesville Police Department, where she served as a secretary. Yet, Velma was not defined by her professional accomplishments alone. She was a generous spirit who loved her family fiercely and enjoyed gathering them around the dinner table. Velma found great joy in birdwatching and feeding, and loved being with her beloved cats. An avid reader, she found solace and inspiration in the pages of countless books.
Velma leaves behind a beautiful family who will always remember her supportive nature: her son, Tim (Pam) Brattain; granddaughter, Casie (Will) Bussell; grandson, Alex Brattain; step-grandson, Kyle (Lauren) Kreutzinger; brothers, Larry and Jackie Butcher; sister Wanda (Francis) Grogg; and her cherished great-grandchildren, Addison, Layla, Skylar, Sawyer, Graham, and Elliott. She was preceded in death by her parents, Jack and Edith Butcher; son, Gregory Brattain; brothers, Virgil, Pat, and Michael Butcher; sisters, Reba Hood, Joan Findley, and Evelyn Batchelor.
Velma’s life was woven with threads of love, compassion, and dedication. She shaped the world around her with her generous heart and supportive nature. Her life story is not just one of dates and accomplishments but of a woman who lived her life fully, with grace and love. As we remember Velma, we celebrate her life and the indelible mark she left on each of us.
Velma’s wishes were to have a simple cremation and to have a celebration of life at a later date. Velma’s care is entrusted to Hartley-Dunnichay Funeral Homes – Cicero.

Velma Jean (as we called her) was a wonderful lady, very generous to her friends and family. I spent many years being her neighbor and I will always remember her heart and soul. Rest well dear lady, you are now in the arms of Jesus….love you.
