County earns national recognition for Excellence in Digital Government

Ranks third in nation for technology innovation among mid-sized counties

Hamilton County has been recognized as one of the nation’s leading counties for the innovative use of technology, earning third place in the 2026 Digital Counties Survey conducted by the Center for Digital Government (CDG) in partnership with the National Association of Counties (NACo).

Hamilton County ranked third nationwide in the population category of 250,000 to 499,999 residents, placing among the country’s top-performing counties for strategic technology planning, cybersecurity, digital services, data management, and innovation.

Now in its 24th year, the Digital Counties Survey recognizes counties that are using technology to improve government operations, strengthen public services, and better serve residents.

“This award is the result of a countywide commitment to using technology as a tool to better serve our residents,” Hamilton County Director of Information Technology Chris Mertens said. “Whether we’re strengthening our cybersecurity posture, modernizing county systems, or improving online access to services, every project is focused on making local government more secure, efficient, and responsive.”

Award recipients were recognized during the National Association of Counties Annual Conference in New Orleans last week. County Commissioners Mark Heirbrandt and Christine Altman were on hand to celebrate the IT team.

“This recognition reflects the incredible work our Information Technology team does behind the scenes every day,” said Altman, President of the Hamilton County Commissioners. “Technology touches nearly every service we provide. Chris Mertens and his team continue to find innovative ways to improve efficiency, strengthen cybersecurity, and ensure Hamilton County is prepared for the future.”
