The Carmel boys tennis team welcomed Brebeuf Jesuit to the Todd Witsken Tennis Center on Wednesday for a showdown between two top-five ranked teams.
The Braves are ranked No. 1 by the Indiana High School Tennis Coaches Association, while the defending state champion Greyhounds are ranked No. 5. Brebeuf Jesuit played like a top-rated team, beating Carmel 4-1.
The Greyhounds got their win at No. 2 doubles. Sophomores Grant Mu and Rajeev Singh dropped the first set 7-5, then held off the Braves in the second set to win a 7-6 tiebreak. The two teams played a 10-point super tiebreak to decide the third set, and the Carmel team took an early lead and rode that to a 10-6 win.
All the other matches were settled in straight sets for Brebeuf, but the Greyhounds did put up a battle in each one. The No. 1 doubles team of Michael Bao and Andrew Kim lost 7-5, 6-3. In singles, No. 1 Wesley Worobel fell 6-2, 6-4, No. 2 Sanjith Boddu lost 6-1, 6-3 and No. 3 Vishal Shankar fell 6-4, 6-4.
Carmel is 10-2 for the season. The Hounds have wins over three teams currently ranked in the top 10: No. 4 Columbus North, No. 8 Guerin Catholic and No. 10 Bloomington South. Other dual meet victories include wins against No. 14 Homestead, No. 16 Hamilton Southeastern, No. 20 Fishers and No. 21 Park Tudor. Carmel’s only other loss is to No. 2 Zionsville in a 3-2 meet.
This weekend, the Greyhounds play at No. 12 Culver Academies on Friday, then stay at Culver on Saturday for the Michiana Classic, taking on two of Michigan’s best teams.
