Softball Roundup: Tigers take walk-off win; Westfield, Carmel, Sheridan drop games

The Fishers softball team got a walk-off victory Thursday, as Brooke Johnson’s two-run home run sent the Tigers past Mount Vernon 6-5.

The Marauders led 2-0 after scoring one run each in the first and second innings. Fishers came back with three runs in the bottom of the second: Azstryd Alexander hit a two-RBI double into left field to bring home Kendall Jordan and Hailey Kinder, then Jenna Grubb’s sacrifice fly scored Brooke Clayton, giving the Tigers a 3-2 lead.

Mount Vernon tied the game at 3-3 with a run in the top of the third, then scored two in the fifth inning to go up 5-3. Fishers took care of business in the seventh inning. Alexander drew a lead-off walk, then moved to third base on Grubb’s double. Alexander scored on Hailey Trueblood’s RBI groundout.

Johnson came up next and sent a 1-0 pitch over the center field fence to score Grubb, then herself. Johnson, Grubb and Kinder all finished the game with two hits; Johnson also hit a double.

Kate Murray pitched two and two-thirds innings for the win, tossing five strikeouts.

The Tigers are 10-6 and play a Hoosier Crossroads Conference game this evening at Zionsville.

Westfield fell to Yorktown 3-2 in a Thursday home game.

The Tigers led 2-0 midway through the fifth inning. The Shamrocks scored both of their runs in the bottom of the fifth. Cara Snedeker bunted Reese Mahannah in for the first run, then Sofia Easterhaus got home on Ava Kainrath’s RBI fielder’s choice. Yorktown scored the go-ahead run in the seventh inning and turned a double play in the bottom of the seventh to end the game.

Mahannah went 2-for-3 at the plate.

Westfield is 7-7 and plays tonight at Tri-West.

Carmel dropped a 4-3 game to Tri-West Thursday at Cherry Tree Softball Complex.

Jayden Kleiner got the Greyhounds on the board in the first inning with a solo home run. Both teams scored a second-inning run; K Smith bunted Paxton Law home to give Carmel a 2-1 lead.

Kleiner scored her second run of the game in the third inning, getting home on a passed ball. That gave the Hounds a 3-1 lead, but the Bruins scored twice in the sixth inning and got the go-ahead run in the seventh.

Carmel is 4-13 and plays this afternoon at Guerin Catholic.

Sheridan dropped a 10-1 Hoosier Heartland Conference game to Tri-Central Thursday at Biddle Park.

The Blackhawks scored their run in the first inning, when Abbi Merritt doubled Emma Settles home. Merritt and Shelby Eaton both had two hits.

Maelei Casler pitched a complete game, striking out eight.

Sheridan is 2-9 and hosts Guerin Catholic on Monday.
