Thomas Lee Hamble

September 30, 1935 – May 14, 2024

Thomas Lee Hamble was born on September 30, 1935, in Fishers to Hollis and Frances Hamble. He died on May 14, 2024, in Fairmount, Ind.

Tom was proud of playing basketball at Fishers High School where he graduated as valedictorian of the Class of 1953. In October of 1954, he joined the U.S. Army, and upon completion of basic training was stationed in the Panama Canal Zone. He married his high school sweetheart, Norma Louise Cash, on January 5, 1955, and together in Panama they began their lifetime journey of nearly 70 years of marriage.

After service to his country, Tom returned to Indiana where he farmed with his father and son-in-law for nearly 50 years until his “retirement” a few years ago. Old farmers never really retire; they remain as weather and crop-watchers, offering advice and counsel to the “young guys.” Tom did this well. In 1993, he moved the family farm from Hamilton County to Grant County. There he was instrumental in building a successful no-till farming operation and was considered an expert in this method of farming.

Tom and Norma had three daughters, three sons-in-law, five grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. Tom was enormously proud of all of them and was active in their lives until he died.

Tom and Norma were best friends forever and had a marriage filled with love, joy, laughter, and adventure. They traveled the country in a succession of Buicks, the last being a ’22 Enclave that he wanted as his last car.

He was a very intelligent man and an avid reader. His family considered him an expert on multiple subjects, especially WWII. It was easy for him to solve difficult acrostic puzzles.

Tom was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Charles; and a sister, Sara.

He leaves his cherished wife, Norma; daughters, Susan (John Miller), Sandra (Don Myers), and Sonya (Monty) Mullins; grandchildren, Katelyn Earnest (Trent Morgan), Andrew Miller (Lauren), Hunter Myers (Courtney), Lindsay Jensen (Jake), and Tommy Mullins; great-grandchildren, Nora, Henry, Quinn, Abigail, Naomi, and Luke. He had several nieces and nephews.

Arrangements for Tom have been entrusted to the Fairmount Chapel of Armes-Hunt Life Celebration Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 415 S. Main St., Fairmount, IN 46928. There will be no services.

Memorial contributions can be made to Second Harvest Food Bank, 6621 N. Old State Road 3, Muncie, IN 47303.
