FISHERS – The Hamilton Southeastern boys basketball team dropped a tough home game to Crown Point 72-55 on Friday.

The Bulldogs came into the Royals’ gym with a perfect record and a No. 8 ranking in Class 4A and used a hot-shooting first half to build an early lead. Southeastern played more even with Crown Point in the second half, but the Bulldogs stayed in front of the Royals by double digits.

Southeastern skipped out to a 6-2 lead, with Maverick Young, Landon Osswald and Jack Jacobs all making baskets. Crown Point’s Mason Darrell took over from there, nailing a two-point basket and a 3-pointer to push the Bulldogs ahead 7-6. Lucas Weemer gave HSE the lead back with a layin, but a Darrell triple put CP back in front.

Mason scored 13 points in the first quarter, helping the Bulldogs to a 21-12 lead. Crown Point then opened the second period on a 15-2 run, holding its largest advantage at 36-14 before Young scored five points to cut that lead to 36-19 by halftime.

“We got one senior and we got a lot of juniors who really haven’t played at this level,” said Royals coach John Ashworth. “And they got to figure out how to play against really good teams and the attention to detail that it takes. You can’t wait till you’re down 12 to start playing hard. We got to get off to better starts.”

Southeastern stayed with the Bulldogs in the second half, with both teams scoring 17 points in the third quarter and 19 in the fourth. The Royals cut Crown Point’s lead to 46-33 with a 7-0 run during the middle part of the third; Kallen Hoeft helped out with a 3.

Young caught fire in the fourth period with a pair of triples, then Jacobs, Braeden Totten and Zachary Tansel all made 3s as well. Young finished the game with five 3-pointers and led all scorers with 19 points. Jacobs and Young both pulled four rebounds and Totten dished out five assists.

The Bulldogs had four players in double figures, led by Kingston Rhodes with 16 and Mason with 13.

“I think we’ve beat the teams we should beat and we’ve lost to teams that are good teams,” said Ashworth. “We got to figure out a way how to play better and beat good teams. That’s the key going forward.”

Southeastern is 6-5 and plays Tuesday at North Central.
