Softball: Westfield, Heights & Carmel get all-county wins to start the week

The Westfield softball team won an all-county and Hoosier Crossroads Conference game at Hamilton Southeastern on Tuesday, 1-0.

The Shamrocks scored their run in the sixth inning, when Ava Kainrath’s left field base hit drove in Maggie Roh. It was a big-hitting night for Roh, who counted a double in her 3-for-3 performance at the plate.

Chloe Tanner got the pitching win, striking out nine. Grace Swedarsky also pitched a complete game for the Royals, tossing 17 strikeouts.

Westfield is 4-2 in conference play and 10-11 overall, and plays this afternoon at Hamilton Heights, with a first pitch at 5:30 p.m.

Hamilton Southeastern’s Sage Ladig threw a no-hitter for the Royals on Monday, leading her team to a 23-0, five-inning victory over Anderson.

Ladig had five strikeouts and only allowed two walks.

Southeastern scored six runs in the first inning, then put up 11 runs in the second inning, followed by one in the third and five in the fourth. Ladig, Morgan Hicks and Alex Kiemeyer all hit home runs, while Lani Wyrick and Payton Fox both hit one double.

Fox was 3-for-4 at the plate, batting in four runs and scoring three. Ladig and Kiemeyer both finished with four RBIs as well, while Hicks drove in three runs. Madi Yankauskas and Fox both scored three runs.

The Royals are 3-3 in HCC play and 14-6 overall, and travel to Richmond tonight for a 6 p.m. game.

Westfield dropped a Monday game to Cathedral 9-2.

The Shamrocks scored both of their runs in the seventh inning. Grace Feltz led off with a triple, then scored when Roh reached on error. Roh scored on Makayla Watson’s RBI groundout.

Roh and Kainrath both had two hits.

A no-hitter from Lily Roush gave Hamilton Heights an all-county win on Tuesday.

The Huskies beat Guerin Catholic 12-0 in five innings. Roush threw 12 strikeouts, allowing no hits and issuing no walks.

Heights scored eight runs in the second inning and another four in the third. Roush and Morgan Ottinger were 2-for-2 at the plate, while Hailey Hall, Ottinger and Taya Trosper all scored two runs. Hall also drove in two runs.

The Huskies are 14-6 and host Westfield at 5:30 p.m. this afternoon. The Golden Eagles are 2-10 and play Friday at Western Boone.

Carmel got an all-county victory on Monday, beating Fishers 8-3 at Cherry Tree Softball Complex.

The Greyhounds scored two runs in each of the first three innings. Jayden Kleiner drove in the first two runs, scoring Lily Sullivan and Hope McDonald, who hit a double. In the second inning, Mia Fleming singled in Gracyn Erickson, and Sophie Esposito smacked a triple into center field to bring in Fleming.

A series of doubles got Carmel its third-inning runs. McDonald sent a double into center field, then Kleiner cracked a double into right field to score McDonald. Kleiner was home soon after, as Erickson’s right field double scored another run.

The Tigers got a run back in the fifth inning when Sophie Schoch batted in Victoria Abel with a left field hit. Carmel scored two more runs in the bottom of the fifth: McDonald got home on Katherine Warren’s right field hit, then Fleming doubled Lucy Broughton home.

Fishers’ Taylor Duplessis hit a two-run home run in the seventh inning, also scoring Hailey Kinder.

McDonald was 3-for-4 for the ‘Hounds, with two doubles and a single. Broughton got the pitching win. Schoch had two hits for the Tigers, and Jenna Grubb hit a triple.

Carmel is 3-12 and hosts Terre Haute North on Friday.

Fishers dropped an HCC game to Franklin Central 3-2 on Tuesday.

The Flashes scored a run in the top of the first inning, then put up two more runs in the top of the sixth. The Tigers scored their runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Sophie Schoch reached on error, then Victoria Abel came in to run for her. Hailey Trueblood smacked a double to move Abel to third, then Brooke Johnson hit a sacrifice fly to bring Abel home. Trueblood scored after Kate Murray reached on error.

Azstryd Alexander also hit a double. Murray pitched a complete game, tossing nine strikeouts.

Fishers is 3-2 in conference play and 12-6 overall, and hosts New Palestine at 5:30 p.m. today.

Sheridan split a pair of games to start the week.

On Monday, the Blackhawks won at Traders Point Christian 17-9 in a six-inning game. The Blackhawks opened with five runs in the first inning: Jacquellynne Bates scored on Maelei Casler’s RBI groundout, Chaney Smith stole home plate. Mariana Lopez got home on a wild pitch, then Emma Settles singled in Claudia Headlee and Abbi Merritt.

Traders Point scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning, then added a run in the second to get within 5-4. Sheridan added a run in the third inning when Settles cracked a triple that brought Shelby Eaton home.

Bates scored a fourth-inning run by stealing home plate, and the ‘Hawks led 7-4. Sheridan then erupted for seven runs in the fifth inning: Kennedy Zachary singled in Settles, then Smith batted in Zachary. Casler’s center field hit scored Bates, then Merritt doubled home Smith, Casler and Lopez. Merritt later scored on a wild pitch, and Sheridan was up 14-4.

Traders Point avoided the run rule by scoring three runs in the bottom of the fifth. The Blackhawks then scored five runs in the top of the sixth: Bates got home on a wild pitch, then a Lopez triple brought in Smith and Casler.

Smith and Lopez both had two hits. Settles struck out seven for the pitching win.

Sheridan dropped a tough Hoosier Heartland Conference game at Taylor Tuesday, 9-7.

Both teams scored one run in the first inning; Bates got the Blackhawks on the board by stealing home plate. Settles then stole home in the third inning to give Sheridan a 2-1 lead, but the Titans scored twice in the bottom of the inning to lead 3-2.

The Blackhawks put up five runs in the top of the fifth. Ashlynn Tryon singled in Claire Purciful, then Lopez scored when Eaton hit a single. Tryon later stole home, then Merritt’s base hit scored Eaton and Cecelia Cox. That gave Sheridan a 7-3 lead, but Taylor scored six runs in the bottom of the fifth.

Bates had two hits.

The Blackhawks are 2-17 and hosts Delphi at 5:30 p.m. today.
