Softball Roundup: GC gets first season win; Millers, Huskies, Blackhawks fall

The Guerin Catholic softball team cruised to its first win of the season Monday, beating Warren Central 17-6 in five innings.

The Golden Eagles put up eight runs in the top of the first inning and never looked back. Anna Mauch, Lucy Kemp and Madi Cain all hit RBI doubles. The Warriors cut Guerin Catholic’s lead to 8-5 by the end of the third inning, but the Golden Eagles surged ahead with four runs in the fourth, including a two-RBI double from Emily Powers.

Mauch hit another RBI double in the fifth inning, then Brooklyn Fritsche later smacked a two-run home run. Mauch finished the game 3-for-4, while Powers and Fritsche both were 2-for-4. Powers totaled four RBIs, while Mauch and Kemp both scored three runs. Rilee Kluesner got the pitching win, throwing four strikeouts and allowing three hits.

Guerin Catholic is 1-7 and hosts Carmel on Friday.

Noblesville dropped a high-scoring home game to New Palestine 18-16 on Monday.

Both teams scored four runs in the first inning. The Millers’ Gabby Fowler sent a two-run home run into left field, also scoring Delaney Rundle. Mack Harvey followed that a two-run homer into right field, also scoring Chloe Vetter.

Noblesville added two runs in the second. Nevaeh Nash scored on Makayla Jacquay’s sacrifice bunt, then Fowler doubled Rundle home. The Dragons got a run back in the top of the third, but Harvey doubled Addi Emmerson home in the bottom of the third to give the Millers a 7-5 lead.

New Palestine took over in the fourth inning, putting up 10 runs to lead 15-7, including a pair of home runs. Emmerson hit her own home run in the bottom of the fourth, a three-run blast that also brought Fowler and Jacquay home. Harvey then cracked a two-run homer in the sixth inning, also scoring Macie Duvall.

Noblesville was now within 15-12. The Dragons scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning to lead 18-12. The Millers fought to the end: Fowler smacked a solo home run, Harvey doubled in Emmerson, then Haley Schatko smacked a two-run home run, also bringing Bella Hughes home. But New Pal got the third out to end the game.

Harvey was 5-for-5 at the plate, with Fowler hitting 4-for-5.

Noblesville is 6-7 and hosts Westfield this evening at 6 p.m.

Hamilton Heights fell at Yorktown, 16-6 in six innings Monday.

The Huskies got on the board in the second inning with a two-run home run by Kassidy Schakel that also scored Kamryn Rhoton. Addie Doak hit a solo homer in the top of the fourth inning, and Heights led 3-2.

But the Tigers put up eight runs in the bottom of the fourth to jump ahead 10-3. The Huskies got three runs back in the top of the fifth: Rhoton scored when Lily Cash reached on error, then Doak smacked a left field double to bring in Cash and Hailey Hall. Yorktown scored three runs each in the fifth and sixth innings to end the game.

Doak was 4-for-4 at the plate, while Schakel hit a double. Hannah Dent had two doubles.

Heights is 7-4. The Huskies’ Hoosier Conference East game with Northwestern scheduled for Tuesday was postponed. Heights is scheduled to play at Northwestern this afternoon.

Sheridan fell to Herron 16-3 in five innings on Monday.

Emma Settles scored all three of the Blackhawks’ runs. Settles hit a double in the first inning, then was sent home by Maelei Casler’s single. Casler doubled in Settles for a third inning run, then Abbi Merritt singled in Settles in the fifth inning.

Settles and Casler both had two hits.

Sheridan is 2-8 and hosts Covenant Christian tonight. The Blackhawks’ Tuesday Hoosier Heartland Conference game with Clinton Central was postponed.
