Smoke & extreme heat affecting blood donations across the Midwest

Versiti encourages healthy donors to give as weather conditions disrupt the regional blood supply

Smoke from northern wildfires and extreme heat across the country are affecting blood donations across the Midwest, making it more difficult for some donors to keep scheduled appointments while hospitals continue to rely on a steady blood supply.

Blood is needed every day for trauma patients, people receiving cancer treatment, individuals undergoing surgery and premature infants. Unlike many medical supplies, blood cannot be manufactured and depends entirely on volunteer donors.

Versiti is encouraging eligible donors who are feeling well to schedule appointments in the coming days to help offset donations that may be delayed or missed due to poor air quality and dangerous heat. There is an immediate need for all blood types, especially O-negative and O-positive blood, which are essential for emergency transfusions.

Why this matters

  • Hospitals continue to need blood every day, regardless of weather conditions.
  • Smoke and extreme heat can reduce donor turnout and disrupt scheduled appointments.
  • Every successful blood donation helps ensure lifesaving blood is available when patients need it most.

Donor safety during extreme heat & poor air quality

Donor safety remains Versiti’s top priority. If you have a blood donation appointment during the heat wave or periods of poor air quality, taking a few simple precautions can help make your donation experience safe and comfortable.

Before your appointment:

  • Drink plenty of water before and after donating.
  • Eat a healthy meal before you donate.
  • Wear lightweight, comfortable clothing.
  • Stay cool and limit time outdoors in the heat or smoky conditions before arriving.

If you are experiencing symptoms related to smoke exposure, including difficulty breathing, persistent coughing or feeling unwell, please stay home and reschedule your appointment when you are feeling better. Your health and safety come first.

If you’re feeling well and it’s safe to travel in your area, please consider donating at a nearby Versiti donor center or community blood drive. Every donation helps ensure hospitals have the blood they need for patients across our communities. If smoke or extreme heat prevents you from keeping your appointment, please reschedule as soon as conditions improve.
