It seemed like everyone that participated in the Fishers boys track & field sectional on Thursday was in contention for the team trophy.

When the dust settled, Hamilton Southeastern was able to make its way to the top. The Royals defended their team sectional championship, scoring 110 points. The top three teams were close: Carmel placed second with 106.25, while Fishers was third with 103.

“We knew going into it, it was going to be a very tough meet and very tight, based on the heat sheets,” said Southeastern coach Garrett Lawton. “We had some guys step up big and that ended up being enough at the end of the day.”

The Royals won one event, the pole vault. Sophomore Weston Kopeck cleared 13 feet, 6 inches, which isn’t bad for someone who was competing in his first sectional.

“It’s definitely crazy,” said Kopeck. At this time last year, Kopeck wasn’t even on the county or Hoosier Crossroads Conference rosters because his best was 10 feet.

“Over the summer and over the winter I really put in some work and I finally got up to 14 feet,” said Kopeck. “It was a crazy season.”

Southeastern also got points from Sam Long, who was the runner-up in both the 110 and 300 hurdles, while Omar Elsayed took second in the 800 run.

Carmel was powered a pair of 1-2 finishes. Lucas Bartlett won the 3200 with Jonah Kaul placing second, then Gabriel Davis was the long jump champion, with Alim Broadnax the runner-up.

The Tigers had the most event wins of all with five. Rocky Duplessis won the 400 dash, with Vincent Rozzi claiming the 200 dash. Fishers finished the meet with a victory in the 4×400 relay. The Tigers added two field event victories: Konrad Hayden was first in the high jump and Mason Cantwell was the shot put winner.

Westfield was a close fourth, scoring 94.25 points. Logan Tuck won the 110 hurdles, while the Shamrocks’ 4×800 and 4×400 relay teams were also victorious. An extra boost came in the 100 dash, where Westfield had three runners due to the 3-participant standard. Cayden Gearhart was second in 10.98 seconds, with Maison McCray edging out Olumide Fapetu for third (10.984 second to 10.986 seconds).

Noblesville’s Angel Wilson won the 100 dash in 10.93 seconds, the first of two Millers wins. Banner Barnes claimed the others, taking the 800 and 1600 runs. Isaiah Vohs was second in the 1600 to give Noblesville a 1-2 result in that event; Vohs was also third in the 800.

Hamilton Heights’ Will Duncan was the discus winner and placed second in the shot put.
