The Rotary Club of Carmel kicked off Leadership Connection 2023 with a day of service held at the Carmel Clay Public Library.

On Sept. 14, Leadership Connection welcomed 100 students from Carmel High School, Christel House Watanabe Manual High School, and Pro/Act Indy who all were fully invested in a day of leadership training and related activities led by Chairman Tim Flint, Vice Chairman Louise Jackson, and Pro/Act Indy Founder Derrin Slack.

Chick-fil-A, the official food sponsor, fed the 170 students, advisors, and Rotary volunteers in attendance.

The second part of Leadership Connection will be held on Friday, Oct. 27 at OneAmerica, Indianapolis (the Leadership Connection Event Sponsor). The educational component is underwritten by Indiana University Indianapolis. For that event, Leadership Connection expects to host 160 students.

Among the numerous community leaders on hand for student presentations and leadership discussions will be Jimmie McMillian, Senior Corporate Counsel for IndyCar and Indianapolis Motor Speedway; Dr. Demetra Andrews, Kelley School of Business; Stephon Tuitt, Notre Dame All-American and former Pittsburgh Steeler; Chris Jensen, Mayor of Noblesville; and Danny Portee, President and CEO of Professional Management Enterprises and Portee Leadership Connection Scholarships donor.

Leadership Connection launched in 2021 from a unique partnership between the Carmel Rotary and community and civic partners, including the Carmel Fire Department, Carmel Clay Parks and Recreation, Carmel Clay Schools, the Hamilton County Leadership Academy, iTeam, ProAct Indy, the Carmel Mayor’s Student Advisory Council, and Christel House Watanabe Manual High School.

The vision is to develop a forum for local high school students to engage with distinguished professionals from both the private and public sectors, allowing students to build professional and personal leadership skills while providing members of our community the opportunity to impact the next generation positively. The mission is to connect today’s leaders to ignite future leaders in building a stronger community.
