Carmel Fire Department kicks off Movember to support men’s mental health

For the fifth year in a row, the Carmel Fire Department (CFD) is bringing the community together to shine a light on men’s health, encourage conversations about mental wellness, and raise funds. This year’s recipient of this fundraising effort is Building A Refuge, a men’s mental health resource in Carmel.

CFD kicked off its fifth annual Movember campaign with a press conference on Nov. 1 at the “Everyone Deserves Their Morning Sun” roundabout, located at the intersection of Range Line Road, Lowes Way, and Clay Terrace Boulevard.

This year the department continues its mission of reminding men that taking care of their health – both physical and mental – is essential. Through community awareness and fundraising, the campaign encourages men to advocate for themselves, speak openly about their struggles, and seek support when they need it.

For every $5 raised, a blue flag will be placed in the roundabout, creating a growing visual display of the community’s commitment to men’s health challenges. Each flag serves as a reminder that no one should have to face life’s challenges alone.

While CFD takes men’s health and mental wellness seriously, the department is bringing plenty of camaraderie, creativity, and fun to its annual Movember campaign. Through November, firefighters will participate in a variety of activities designed to spark conversations, engage the community, and keep the focus on the important mission.

Return of the Stache

From mustaches to miles, the department is finding unique ways to get everyone involved. A mustache identification contest will challenge participants to match mustaches to the firefighters who wear them, bringing some friendly competition to the cause. Mustaches will also make an appearance on the department’s frontline apparatus, and crews will show their support by wearing special Movember shirts throughout the month.

The department also puts miles behind its message. Members sign up to commit to walking 60 miles in the month of November, to raises awareness to the 60 men who commit suicide every hour of every day. The effort is intended to draw attention to the importance of mental health support, recognizing that behind every statistic is a person, a family, and a community impacted by suicide.

Although the mustaches and team challenges bring an element of fun to the campaign, the message behind them is serious: men’s health deserves attention every day of the year. By using humor, teamwork, and visible displays of support, Carmel firefighters hope to make it easier to start conversations, or take actionable items, that might otherwise go unspoken and undone.

Men, your health matters

For the Carmel Fire Department, Movember is about more than growing a mustache or wearing a shirt. It is about building connections, supporting one another, and reminding every man that his health matters. By encouraging men to speak up, seek support, and advocate for their own physical and mental well-being, we can create a stronger, healthier community and empower men to have the courage to take action when it comes to their health.

Together, we can make a difference – one conversation, one step, and one blue flag at a time.
