House Bill 1210 was signed by Governor Mike Braun on March 12, then becoming Public Law 157. Among other things, that 418-page document has some property tax relief for disabled veterans, and 100-percent relief for 100-percent disabled veterans.
That law increases the property tax deduction for a veteran who is totally disabled to 100 percent of the assessed value of the individual’s real property, instead of $14,000. It also ends property tax deductions for certain veterans, instead providing a property tax liability credit. It also restores the property tax deduction available to a surviving spouse of a World War I veteran, which was limited by SEA 1-2025.
The law does not go into effect until the 2027 tax bill, and the Auditor’s Office is not accepting any deduction forms prior to July 1, 2026. Deductions forms can then be filed through Dec. 30 2026.
Veterans who have a copy of their DD 214 and benefit summary letter that the Veterans Administration mails every year in November can go to the Auditor’s Office directly to apply for the deduction.
Each veteran must follow the instructions to qualify for the Tax Credit with the Hamilton County Tax Authority. If they do not, they will not receive their well-deserved tax credit.
The Hamilton County Veterans Services Office is scheduled to start training sessions for veterans to apply for this credit on June 1.
