Marilyn Sutton

June 5, 1931 – April 26, 2026

Marilyn Sutton, 94, Carmel, passed away on Sunday, April 26, 2026, surrounded by her family. She was born on June 5, 1931, to Edward and Elizabeth (Allen) Hocker in Indianapolis.

Marilyn devoted her life to her family as a stay-at-home mother and deeply loved grandmother. Her home in Fishers was the heart of family life, especially during summers and holidays when all the kids and cousins would gather. She was known for her homemade chili, chicken and noodles, caramel corn, and her famous cheese ball that brought everyone to the table.

She and her husband Joe were a steady and loving presence at every major family event. Their unwavering support was felt by children and grandchildren alike.

Marilyn had a lifelong love of music and musical theater. She was rarely without a tune, often humming as she went about her day and occasionally breaking into full song. She shared her voice generously, singing at weddings and funerals over the years. Even as recently as a few years ago, she performed in a cabaret at her independent living community in Carmel. Whether attending performances like the Purdue Christmas Show or simply sitting in the audience, Marilyn could be heard joyfully singing along.

Above all, Marilyn embraced her role as “The Grandma of All Grandmas.” She loved her family more than anything, and her warmth, presence, and traditions will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

She is survived by her daughter, Shelly Sutton; sons, Andrew (Carol) Sutton, John Sutton, and David Sutton; grandchildren, Kylie (Mitch) Graham, Lily Conrad, and Isaac, Helena, Noah, and Owen Sutton. She is also survived by many beloved nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Marilyn was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Joe E. Sutton; sister, Barbara Mowry; and brothers, Richard Hocker and Ronald Hocker.

Marilyn never wanted anyone to go hungry – memorial contributions may be made Carmel Friends Church Food Pantry, 651 W. Main St., Carmel, IN 46032. Online donations can be made at tinyurl.com/CarmelFriendsChurchDonate.

Please join the family in celebrating Marilyn’s life from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. Sunday, June 14, 2026, with a tribute at 3:30 p.m., at the American Legion Post 155, 852 W. Main St., Carmel.
