New York reader questions Sen. Scott Baldwin’s motives

Senator Baldwin,

There was almost a degree of sympathy elicited from your apology for your now obviously wrong-headed statements on what teachers should be instructing in schools. I am as sorry as you for the statements.

But I am dismayed by the want to make the remarks in the first place. There is no need for legislators to get involved in school subject matters, unless they are attempting to appeal to a simple-minded political base that cannot understand what the proper forum for such issues might be.

While I am afraid you are not the only elected official to engage in this practice, perhaps this will be an opportunity for you to urge others to refrain from such tactics and apply themselves in a more responsible way.

Thank you.

Ken Williams
