HCC announces All-Conference teams

The Hoosier Crossroads Conference released its All-Conference teams for the Spring 2022 season Thursday, and parity was the name of the game.

Five different schools were conference champions among the six spring sports. The only double winner was Fishers, which easily claimed HCC titles in baseball and girls tennis.

The Tigers won the baseball championship with a 12-2 record. As a result, they got the most players on the First Team All-HCC with four: Seniors Joey Brenczewski and Joey Wilmuth, junior Carson Dunn and sophomore Jack Brown. Two more seniors, Dom Oliverio and Tate Warner, received Second Team honors.

Westfield finished third in the conference with an 8-6 record. Senior Trey Dorton and Gage Stanifer, and junior Collin Lindsey were named to the First Team, while senior Keaton Mahan and Maximus Webster are on the Second Team.

Noblesville tied for fourth in the HCC at 7-7. Junior Bryce Riggs and freshman Trevor Corbett received First Team honors, and senior John Kern and sophomore Nolan Decker were placed on the Second Team.

Hamilton Southeastern tied for seventh with a 3-11 record. Senior Sam Reagan was named to the First Team and junior Ty Bradle received Second Team honors.

GIRLS TENNIS: TIGERS ON TOP

Fishers took care of business at the HCC tournament, finishing first with 48 points. Southeastern was the runner-up with 39 points, while Westfield took third with 36 points. Noblesville finished fifth by scoring 33 points.

All four county teams had players make the All-HCC team, which is determined by how they place in their respective flights. The eventual state runner-up Tigers had high finishes in four flights, giving them five all-conference players. Mischa Briggs won at No. 1 singles, Izzy Mokra placed second at No. 2 singles, Caroline Ober won the No. 3 singles division and Madelyn Baron and Meredith Ober were the No. 2 doubles winners. Fishers coach Dave Heffern was named Coach of the Year.

The Royals’ No. 1 doubles team of Misha Bukkasagaram and Emily Orme earned all-conference honors by placing second at No. 1 doubles, while the Shamrocks’ No. 1 singles player Isabella Norris got on the All-HCC team with a runner-up finish in that flight. The Millers had three all-conference players: Bella Duncan took third at No. 1 singles and Lina Hamashuk and Alli Maskew were third at No. 1 doubles.

BOYS GOLF: SHAMROCKS SWEEP

Westfield edged out Southeastern for the boys golf conference title May 14 at Bear Slide. The Shamrocks scored 299, while the Royals carded a 301.

All five of eventual state runner-up Westfield’s participating golfers earned All-Conference honors. Those that finish in the top 12 receive automatic placement on the All-HCC squad, but there was a four-way tie for 11th place, thus 14 players were honored.

Freshman Will Harvey was the meet medalist with a 72, while senior Nolan Hall tied for fifth with a 75. The other three Shamrocks – Matt Shull, Cam Kooi and Jake Cesare – all carded 76s an were part of the 11th-place tie. Westfield coach Josh Bryant was named Coach of the Year.

The Royals, who would go on to place third in the state, had three all-conference players. Tyler Marcinko tied for third with a 74, then Lane Zedrick and Cole Starnes both scored 75s to get in on the fifth-place tie.

Fishers’ Connor McMillan was the individual runner-up with a 73, while Noblesville’s Will Perkins carded 76 and tied for 11th; thus earning All-HCC honors.

SOFTBALL: TIE FOR SECOND

Avon won the HCC championship in softball with a 6-1 record. There was a three-way tie for second place, and all three were county schools: Hamilton Southeastern, Noblesville and Westfield all finished with 4-3 records. As a result, all three schools had three First Team players and two more Second Team players.

The Royals’ three First Team student-athletes are Payton Fox, Taylor Larson and Lani Wyrick. Emma Zance and Jenna Chase received Second Team honors.

The Millers’ First Team players are Lauren DeRolf, Gabby Fowler and Scout Duplaga. Noblesville’s Second Team representatives are Lulu Van Beek and Emme Yee.

The three Shamrocks on the First Team are Avery Parker, Maggie Roh and Chloe Tanner. Allie Dolenc and Sam Breaux both received Second Team honors. Brian Revercomb was one of the Coaches of the Year; Avon coach Jennifer Chasteen also received the award.

Fishers was part of a three-way tie for fifth place, finishing with a 3-4 record. Kaylee Kardash and Kate Murray both were named to the First Team, while Sophie Schoch and Hannah Abbott earned Second Team honors.

GIRLS TRACK: MILLERS MAKE HISTORY

Noblesville won its first-ever HCC girls track championship on May 3 at Zionsville. The eventual state runner-up Millers had five event wins, and event winners automatically receive a place on the All-Conference team.

Summer Rempe got two victories, winning the 800 run after teaming with Brinkley Cooper, Riley Flynn and Paige Hazelrigg to take the 4×800 relay. Kiana Siefert was the 110 hurdles champion, Hannah Alexander was first in discus and Malina Miller won the high jump.

Southeastern finished second at the meet, placing first in the 4×400 relay. The team of Elia Blackmore, Ciara Kepner, Jehnea Mirro and Regan Wans thus received all-conference awards.

Fishers’ Ella Scally won two events, the 200 dash and the long jump, making her a two-time All-HCC student-athlete. Westfield also placed first in two events. Liz Smith won the 3200 run and Lucy Hauser joined her on the all-conference list by taking the 300 hurdles.

BOYS TRACK: ROYALS RULE

Hamilton Southeastern was the team champion at the HCC boys track meet, which took place May 9 at Fishers. The Royals picked up two event wins: Nolan Satterfield won the 1600 run, and Lamine Sall was first in the long jump, giving them both all-conference honors. Garrett Lawton won Coach of the Year.

Fishers had three event winners and automatic all-HCC student-athletes. Keefer Soehngen paced the 400 dash, then joined Makell Wiggins, Tyler Tarter and Grant Shelton to win the 4×400 relay. Josh Forbes won the pole vault.

Noblesville’s Asher Propst was first in the 3200 run, giving him all-conference honors in that event. Westfield’s Kai Connor won the 800 run, also placing him on the All-HCC team. Connor would go on to win the state championship in the 800 in early June.
