Gramlich applauds law enforcement, calls for reversing cuts from SEA1

Dear Editor:

I’d like to take a moment to give a shoutout to our local law enforcement. The incredible work done by our local police agencies every single day is a major reason why we are fortunate to live in one of the safest counties in Indiana.

I recently participated in the Carmel Citizens Police Academy, an 11-week program that teaches Carmel residents about the operations of the Carmel Police Department. The experience is informative, inspiring, and sheds light on the community problems our police officers tackle. I am also a proud member of the Carmel Police Citizens Alliance, a group you can join to continue supporting our officers after the Police Academy.

In particular, I want to highlight the Carmel Fraternal Order of Police. This organization does an extraordinary job of representing our local law enforcement. Their monthly “Back the Blue Bingo” is a great way to support community outreach, officer assistance, and charitable programs. In addition, it’s a fun way to spend an afternoon! I highly encourage community members to attend their next Bingo event on Oct. 23!

Our Hamilton County law enforcement deserve the highest praise and respect, and they deserve to be fully funded. Recently passed state legislation (SEA1) poses significant budget and revenue challenges for municipal police departments across the state. Our state must reverse these cuts and ensure our law enforcement has the resources they need to keep our communities safe.

We must also pass our school referendums to ensure the School Resource Officer program remains intact and schools continue to have dedicated SROs.

Our high level of public safety is part of what makes Hamilton County special, and we have our local police forces to thank for that.
