Good News from the Stony Creek Church of Christ

What does Jesus have to offer me? Why should I become His disciple?

I am confident that we all know who Jesus is. We probably even know that Jesus wants us to surrender to Him and obey Him.

But why should I give Him any thought? Why should I believe in Him, surrender to Him, commit my life to Him, and become His disciple? What are the benefits of becoming His disciple?

In this column and those to come, I want to encourage you to think about what Jesus has to offer you, things you desperately need, and help you understand why it is important to become His disciple.

Being a follower of Jesus will help you have confidence that God is helping provide for you in a special way because you are His child!

It is true that God showers some blessings on all people regardless of their spiritual allegiance. He sends the rain and sunshine on the good as well as the evil (Matthew 5:45). But there are greater blessings and promises given to those who are the faithful followers of God’s Son, Jesus.

Rather than being troubled and anxious, Jesus calls upon His followers to be calm and at peace. Why? Listen to His words: “Do not worry then, saying, ‘What will we eat?’ or ‘What will we drink?’ or ‘What will we wear for clothing?’ For the Gentiles eagerly seek all these things; for your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you” (Matthew 6:31-33).

Followers of Jesus, who place a priority on spiritual affairs, need not be anxious about the basic necessities of life, for God promises to provide for them.

On another occasion Jesus said, “Or what man is there among you who, when his son asks for a loaf, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, he will not give him a snake, will he? If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give what is good to those who ask Him!” (Mat. 7:9-11)

Would you like to have the Creator and Ruler of the universe looking after your needs? Then follow His Son, Jesus, wherever He leads.

Being a follower of Jesus will allow you to have access to God through the avenue of prayer.

The ears of God are open to those who are righteous and closed to those who are not His children (1 Peter 3:12). Therefore, if you are not a follower of Jesus then God does not hear your prayers. There is no power or potency to the prayers of non-followers. Only the righteous followers of Jesus can talk with God about their problems, questions, and needs. What a sad thought to realize that God turns a deaf ear to one’s prayers! How terribly lonely. How terribly sad.
