Golden Eagles take two at Catholic Classic

The Guerin Catholic baseball team won both of its games Saturday, May 9 at an abbreviated Catholic Classic at Lafayette Central Catholic.

The Golden Eagles beat South Bend St. Joseph 4-1 in their first game. Guerin Catholic scored its first run in the fifth inning when Nolan Ratcliff batted in Liam Zorger.

Zorger hit a one-out double in the seventh inning then moved to third base on a Ratcliff single. Everyone went home on the next at-bat: Ian Taylor smacked a three-run home run.

Karson Smith also hit a double. Tate Troxell pitched 6.2 innings, striking out 12 and allowing two hits. Tyler Larsh got the final out in the seventh inning.

The Golden Eagles took care of the host LCC Knights 12-1 in their second game, scoring five runs in the sixth inning to get the run-rule victory.

Taylor led off the fifth-inning with a center field homer. Ratcliff, Smith and Jackson Baker all hit a double, with Smith totaling three RBIs. Taylor drove in two runs and scored three.

Harrison Haq went four innings for the win, striking out 10 and allowing one hit.

Guerin Catholic is 17-2-1 and plays Wednesday at Lapel.

Westfield came from behind to win a Hoosier Crossroads Conference game 6-4 Monday at Zionsville.

The Eagles scored a run in the third inning, but the Shamrocks tied things up in the fourth inning when Gavin Russ doubled in Aiden Grabowski.

Both teams added three runs in the fifth inning. Beck Jordan batted in Kasen Jessup, then Grabowski hit a two-RBI single to bring in Andrew Noble and Jordan.

Westfield pulled ahead 5-4 in the sixth inning when Nick Fero smacked a leadoff home run. Noble then doubled Gabe Garcia home for the Rocks’ sixth run.

Grabowski also hit a double. James Kovacz pitched 2.2 innings for the win.

Westfield is 6-4 in HCC play and 11-8-1 overall. The Shamrocks host Columbus North tonight.

Fishers cruised to a 10-0, six-inning home win over Lafayette Jefferson Monday.

The Tigers were in control from the start, scoring five runs in the first inning. David Pina totaled two RBIs, with Vincent Pecoraro and Connor Hackworth both scoring two runs. Owen Lukac pitched two innings for the win.

Fishers is 11-12 and hosts Franklin Central on Thursday to begin an HCC series.

Carmel split a doubleheader with Brownsburg Saturday, May 9 at Hartman Field.

The Greyhounds dropped the first game 7-2. Mark Neels scored a second-inning run on Luke Bryant’s RBI groundout, then Jackson Harris added a sixth-inning run by getting home on a passed ball.

Bryant hit one double. Cam Carmichael threw five strikeouts in 5.2 innings.

Carmel triumphed 4-3 in the second game. The Bulldogs led 2-0 before the Hounds got on the board in the fifth inning when John Zangrilli singled in Charlie Ranek, who had gotten on base with a double.

Brownsburg added a run in the top of the sixth to lead 3-1, but Carmel surged ahead by putting up three runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Neels singled in Nate Steele, then Bryant batted in Adam Fouts for the tying run. Jackson Treadway stole home plate to give the Greyhounds the lead.

Zangrilli hit a triple, while Steele also hit a double. Zangrilli, Steele and Neels all had two hits. Eli Wier pitched six innings for the win, striking out four.

Carmel is 7-12 and plays at Mooresville on Thursday.
