Girls swimming sectionals begin with prelims

The swimming post-season began on Thursday with the girls sectional preliminaries.
Carmel is one of the sectional hosts this season, and the Greyhounds began their quest for a 35th consecutive state championship by qualifying all 27 of their swims into the championship heat of Saturday’s finals. Carmel earned the top seed in all 11 events, with Berit Berglund the first seed in the 100 freestyle and backstroke.
Other Greyhounds swimmers getting top seeds are Gretchen Lueking in the 200 free, Madleyn Christman in the individual medley, Colleen Duffy in the 50 free, Hayley Reed in the butterfly, Erin Cummins in the 500 free, Margaret Love in the breaststroke and all three relays.
Noblesville sent all 27 swims into the finals, qualifying 18 into the championship heat and its other nine into the consolation heat. Sammy Huff, the defending state champion in the breaststroke, has the highest seed for the Millers, taking second in that event. Noblesville’s 400 free relay also qualified second.
Westfield also advanced all 27 of its swims, with 16 reaching the championship heat and the other 11 going to the consolations. The Shamrocks had two of their relays, the medley and the 200 free, qualify second in their respective event, with Macy Hoaglan the top individual by taking third in the open 200 free.
Guerin Catholic qualified 11 swims into the finals, with six in the championships and five in the consols. The Golden Eagles’ 400 free relay team qualified fourth in that event, while Erica Hunckler was the top individual qualifier by taking sixth in the 100 free.
Over at Fishers, the Tigers and Hamilton Southeastern both sent all 27 of their swims into the Saturday finals.
The Royals advanced 26 swims into the championship heat and one into the consolations. Audrey Crawford earned two top seeds, in the individual medley and butterfly, while Molly Pedersen is the top seed in the 100 free. Southeastern also will have the first seed in the medley and 400 free relays.
Fishers sent 25 swims into the championship heat and two into the consols. Jo Jo Ramey picked up top seeds in the 200 and 500 freestyles, while Kalli Agaapios is first-seeded in the 50 free and backstroke. Mackenzie Pierce earned the top seed in the breaststroke, and the Tigers are top-seeded in the 200 free relay as well.
Hamilton Heights qualified 19 swims for the Saturday finals, seven in the championships and 12 more in the consolation heat. The Huskies picked up the third seed in the medley relay, with Tara Holder the fourth seed in the 200 free and Teegan Madara the fourth seed in the 500 free.
University competed in the West Lafayette sectional prelims and advanced three swims to the consolation finals. Charlotte Kumler is the 10th seed in the backstroke and 12th seed in the 500 free, while Zoe Napier is the 16th seed in the butterfly.

Positions 1-8 qualify for championship (“A”) final, positions 9-16 qualify for consolation (“B”) final, positions 17-18 are alternates.
