Get trained, not hurt

Chainsaw Safety Workshop set for Aug. 16

Each year, an estimated 36,000 individuals are treated in emergency rooms for chainsaw-related injuries – many requiring over 100 stitches.

In an effort to reduce these incidents and promote safe land management practices, the Hamilton County Invasives Partnership (HIP) will hold a Chainsaw Safety Workshop from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Aug. 16 at the Koteewi Range Sport & Target Center, 11909 Koteewi Drive, Noblesville.

The workshop will be led by Don Carlson, a professional forester with Purdue Extension, and will include both classroom and outdoor demonstrations. Designed for both new and experienced chainsaw users, the program will provide essential training in safe and effective chainsaw operation with an emphasis on invasive species management and land stewardship.

Topics covered will include:

  • Basic chainsaw safety and operation
  • Hazard recognition and risk reduction
  • Tree felling techniques and safety considerations
  • Equipment review and maintenance
  • Live tree felling demonstration (weather permitting)

“We want to equip landowners, volunteers, and conservation-minded individuals with the knowledge and confidence they need to safely manage invasive species and maintain healthy landscapes,” said Claire Lane, urban conservationist with the Hamilton County Soil and Water Conservation District.

A $10 donation is requested for participation. Each registrant will receive a Buckthorn Blaster herbicide dauber bottle – valued at more than $10 – as well as other take-home resources. HIP volunteers and those for whom the donation presents a financial barrier are encouraged to email claire.lane@hamiltoncounty.in.gov to receive a registration discount code. This workshop is open to participants age 18 and older.

The Chainsaw Safety Workshop is presented by the Hamilton County Invasives Partnership, with support from the Hamilton County Soil & Water Conservation District, Hamilton County Parks and Recreation and funding from a Clean Water Indiana grant.
