Update No. 117

I take great pleasure in highlighting the accomplishments of our students and alumni at every opportunity.

Theresa Morris (’88), an accomplished mentor and resource, has been a guiding force for students seeking opportunities in the literary field. Kelly Lewis (’88) has joined Theresa in supporting the efforts of young authors and illustrators from Heights with plans to release new books soon.

Ryan Adkins is set to release his third book with a fourth in development. His Monsters of Math series is illustrated by Lu Hubbell (’23), who has also illustrated and/or contributed to three other published works. Sarah Adkins’ second book in her series, Tasha’s Adventures in Cooking, with Abi Burk (’23) as the series’ illustrator along with her sister Kai Burk (’23), who contributed to that series as well as illustrating the Mama Tembo series. New author Abraham Martin’s first book in a developing series about an adventurous anthropologist is set to be released in 2024.

Hailey Montgomery (’21) reached out to share that she is Director of Funds for the Ball State University Dance Marathon executive board and fundraising for this year’s event. She credited her interest and involvement in helping others to her experience with a Meals-on-Wheels trip her junior year at Heights. She said it was so impactful, it helped lead her to helping Riley Children and families in need at BSU. I couldn’t help but feel proud of this former student who was inspired in high school to continue to do good work for others. Anyone can support her efforts for Riley here.

Speaking of accomplishments, senior Camryn Runner, a University of Evansville recruit, passed Jessica Carr’s (‘11) career scoring record of 1,340 points on Saturday (1,347) to become Heights’ All-Time Leading Scorer in the women’s basketball program. After Tuesday night’s game, Camryn now stands at 1,377 points scored for Heights. Amazing!

On a side note, the Indiana Department of Health (IDOH) is administering a survey seeking input on what your household needs to be healthy and what is needed to support your well-being. Your feedback will help IDOH better serve you and others across Indiana. This survey, open through Dec. 15, is voluntary, anonymous, and available here. Here for Spanish.

Heads up. A waterline improvement project is underway in the Town of Arcadia through the end of December. Because there is a slight possibility that water service throughout our campus could be impacted, we are encouraging our families to be prepared for the possibility of synchronous e-learning day(s). In the event of losing water service for an extended period, communication will be sent out in a similar manner to that of a weather-related closure. We’re keeping our fingers crossed that the project continues through completion without incident.

With the Thanksgiving holiday coming up next week, I can’t help but reflect on the importance of gratitude in our lives. Gratitude is a powerful force that can foster a sense of well-being, improve relationships, and enhance the overall quality of our lives. Wishing you a Thanksgiving season filled with joy, love, and a profound sense of gratitude.
