October 19, 1928 – October 28, 2025

Francis Edgar “Frank” Slim, 97, Pensacola, Fla., formerly of Connersville and Noblesville, passed away on Tuesday, October 28, 2025, at PruittHealth Rehabilitation – Pensacola following a fall in late September. Born in Birmingham, England, on October 19, 1928, he was the son of the late Francis and Maggie Slim.
Frank joined the Royal Marines in 1944 serving 24 years mostly as a Commando across the U.K., Hong Kong, Palestine, Malta, Singapore, and Borneo, earning the rank of Sergeant Major. In 1957, in Portsmouth, England, he married Daphne Gaynham, who preceded him in death in Noblesville in 2015.
After leaving the Marines in 1968, Frank began a new chapter in the British Foreign Service, serving seven years with postings in India, Poland, Egypt, and finally Washington, D.C. Frank and his family chose to emigrate and became American citizens. He remained in the D.C. area until retiring to Connersville in 1993, later moving to Noblesville in 2010. His final move was to Pensacola, Fla., where he spent his final years with his daughters.
Frank was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He loved woodworking, painting, traveling, and tackling homeowner projects. Before moving to Indiana, he built his own ‘ham’ station and enjoyed communicating with people around the world in Morse code and voice; but most of all Frank cherished time with family and friends.
He is survived by daughters, Beverley Slim of Pensacola, Fla., and Amanda Slim and husband Jeffery Schultz of Pensacola; grandchildren, Dana McCabe of Olympia, Wash., and Erik Slim of Pensacola; step-grandchildren, Sarah Schultz Shumaker and Jeffery Schultz; and great-grandchildren, Marshall and Juliette McCabe and Kieran Schultz.
The family welcomes friends to help celebrate Frank’s extraordinary life from noon to 1:30 p.m. Friday, August 28, 2026, at the Urban Winkler Funeral Home, 513 W. 8th St., Connersville. Light refreshments and British biscuits will be served. Frank will be laid to rest in Dale Cemetery.
