Deaf volunteer teaches Fishers residents fire safety

Fishers Fire Department has a unique volunteer in their Fire Corps group. George Martin, who has been deaf since he was young, teaches fire safety to the Fishers community. The annual Fishers Safety Day takes place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. this Saturday at St. Vincent Hospital Fishers. George, along with other members of the Fishers Fire Corps, will be teaching smoke alarm safety utilizing the Hamilton County Safety Trailer. With assistance from an interpreter, George will present safety information to the hearing and the non-hearing alike in an effort to keep our community safe.

Fishers Fire Corps is a group of community members who volunteer their time to assist the fire department in firefighter rehab, victim assistance and public education. George has been a member of the organization for a number of years and just recently began teaching safety messages.

Perhaps unique to many in the community, George is a very active advocate for the disabled and having a passion for keeping people safe. His efforts help the department better relate to the needs of the deaf and hearing impaired and bridges relationships and understanding between the deaf and the hearing.

George welcomes the opportunity to tell you his story and his love for helping others. Truly, a “sign” of community.
