Carmel’s Provenzano fastest in Distance Showcase, Millers’ Barnes wins freshman race

The Carmel track and field teams hosted the fourth annual Carmel Distance Showcase on Friday, with some of the best runners in the Midwest racing in the 3200 run.

This year, there was a freshman race, five heats of the girls race and eight heats of the boys race. The Greyhounds’ Tony Provenzano was the top finisher in the boys race, placing third with a time of 8 minutes, 58.29 seconds. Martinsville’s Martin Barco was the winner (8:48.20) and Brebeuf Jesuit’s Cameron Todd was the runner-up (8:49.08).

Noblesville’s Banner Barnes won the freshman race, clocking in at 9:43.44. He led a 1-2 county finish, with Carmel’s Cooper Szotek placing second in 9:45.30.

Hamilton Southeastern’s Elizabeth Butler was the top girls runner, finishing ninth in 10:48.52.
