Groundbreaking for the long-awaited Carmel Clay Historical Society Museum will be held June 14 at Monon Boulevard and First Street S.W.

The 4 p.m. ceremony was announced Wednesday by society director Deborah Gangstad.

The location is the site of the former Monon Railroad depot, a 140-year-old structure that has been moved to make way for construction of the new museum, but will be returned to site to become part of the museum complex.

The $5 million project is being funded largely by Clay Township along with financial assistance by the City of Carmel and historical society funds. The three-level museum will allow the 190-year history of the community to be displayed with artifacts, photographs, and interactive displays designed to interest youngsters in the progress of Carmel Clay from pioneer days to current times.

Completion of the new building and return of the depot is anticipated by the end of 2024.
