FISHERS – The Carmel girls track & field team started its state championship defense strong on Wednesday with a big win at the Hamilton Southeastern sectional.

The Greyhounds scored 156 points to win the sectional trophy again. Carmel was boosted by three event victories, including a 1-2-3 sweep of the 800 run.

Teams usually can only enter two athletes in an event, but the Hounds had three in the 800 as they had all run a time better than the 3-participant standard during the regular season. And Carmel delivered: Kaitlyn Oshimura won the race in 2 minutes, 12.06 seconds. Sadie Foley finished second and Larkin Taylor was third.

Greyhounds coach Aaron McRill said that “Kaitlyn has come on strong at the end of the season. She’s consistently running 2:12 to 2:14 and she looked so good tonight. Very proud of her and looking forward to her last two races as a senior.”

Larkin Taylor won the 1600 run, with Foley in second place. Carmel opened the meet with a victory in the 4×800 relay, which clocked in at 9:20.81.

Hamilton Southeastern finished second as a team with 100 points, edging out Westfield, who took third place by scoring 97 points.

The Royals picked up four event victories. Anissa Lammie won the 400 dash, while Chloe Senefeld was first in the 300 hurdles and second in the 100 hurdles. Southeastern also claimed the 4×100 and 4×400 relays.

The Shamrocks won two events. Katelyn Eblen was first in the 100 hurdles, while Gracie Czubik won a close high jump event, clearing 5 feet, 5 inches. Hamilton Heights’ Waverly Woolever was second in the high jump, also clearing 5-5; Czubik won a tiebreaker.

Noblesville was fourth as a team by scoring 85 points. Ainsley Meinerding powered the Millers with three event wins. She was first in the 100 dash and the 200 dash, both in personal-best times, and won the long jump.

“I’m really happy with them, especially my 200 because I haven’t PR’ed in that one since last year at state, so I was worried I wouldn’t be able to hit it again,” said Meinerding. “I was just so happy to hit it again.”

Fishers scored 76 points. Mia Tobias swept the discus and shot put events.

Hamilton Heights freshman Lilly Higgins zoomed to victory in the 3200 run, clocking in at 10:25.95. Guerin Catholic’s Amelia Smith won the pole vault, clearing 12 feet, 9 inches.
