Baseball: Huskies get going early, get big victory over Northwestern

The Hamilton Heights baseball team got off to a fast start at Northwestern Wednesday, which led the Huskies to a 7-1 Hoosier Conference East victory.

Heights put up four runs in the first inning. The Huskies loaded the bases with no outs, then John Irion cracked a right field single to score Phoenix Vondersaar and Dean Mason. Heights loaded the bases again, and Nick Hulen got home when L Davis drew a walk. Irion got home when Dillon Pitts reached on error.

The Huskies scored one run in the fifth inning; Hulen got home on Adam Hughes’ RBI groundout. Heights finished the game with Irion’s two-RBI single in the seventh inning, scoring Mason and Hulen.

Irion totaled four RBIs for the game, while Hulen was 3-for-3, including a double, and scored three runs. Hulen also got the pitching win, striking out eight in five innings while allowing one hit. L Chandler relieved him for the final two innings and also allowed one hit.

Heights is 3-1 in division play and 6-6 overall. The Huskies host Northwestern this afternoon to complete the division series.
