The Central Indiana Region (CIR) of the Porsche Club of America, presented an “Evening with Two-Time Indy 500 Winner Al Unser Jr.” at the Basile Westfield Playhouse on Sunday, May 14.
In an informal format motorsport journalist and CIR member, Tom Beeler interviewed Unser about his growing up in the legendary first family of IndyCar racing. A man named Unser has won an astounding 9.5 percent of all the Indy 500-mile races ever run. Al had a challenging life with a strict upbringing and all the challenges that come with fame at young age.
Westfield-based SONAX USA, the North American distributor of world class car-care products, was the presenting sponsor. SONAX is a leading manufacturer of high-end automotive finish protection products.
Scott Goodyear of Carmel, a Porsche owner and CIR member, joined Beeler and Unser on stage reliving the historic 1992 Indy 500. Goodyear finished second to Unser in the closest finish ever in the 500.
A packed house of over 170 members and guests saw 100 percent of the ticket sales given to the Cody Unser First Step Foundation. That is Al Unser’s daughter’s foundation helping people with spinal cord issues. In 1999 at age 12, Cody was paralyzed from the waist down with Transverse Myelitis. She started the foundation to help folks with quality-of-life matters and to help with awareness of spinal cord diseases. More than $3,100 was raised at the event for Cody’s charity.
