Maddison Martin, Hamilton Heights senior, has signed a letter of intent to play tennis for Anderson University in Anderson, Indiana this fall. Anderson University is a member of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) and a NCAA Division III athletic institution. She is the daughter of Ashley Whelchel.
Martin, who wants to be a graphic designer, chose Anderson University because it was welcoming, friendly, offered a strong graphic design and digital arts program and she could continue playing tennis at the college level.
Martin is a multi-sport (tennis and basketball) athlete who is also a member of 4-H. She is a strong student, who is skilled on the court and in the ring showing cows and sheep during 4H competition in the summer. She has received Academic All-State Awards and Most Improved Player for tennis. She is on the A/B Honor Roll and has earned various awards in 4-H during her tenure.
She says she has been passionate about the sport of tennis since she started high school. She practices as much as she can during the season and off-season focuses on the things she needs to improve to get better and be a stronger force on the court.
“Maddi has worked extremely hard on her tennis game, especially in the off-season, and it shows,” said Kurt Ogden, Hamilton Heights High School Athletic Director. “She has earned this opportunity from her dedication to the sport and the good coaching she has received along the way. We’re very happy for Maddi and excited that she gets to continue her tennis career at Anderson University.”
“Maddi has been a huge contributor to Husky Girls tennis during her four-year career!” added Wayne Rupe, Hamilton Heights Girls Tennis Head Coach. “She has improved every year in high school and is a valuable asset to our team! We wish her continued success at AU.”
Martin credits her coaches, Wayne Rupe, and Jeannan Dodson for having a huge impact on her as a player and a person. “They are the ones who made me better by giving their time,” said Martin. “They weren’t just my coaches; they were also like parents because they cared about my mental and physical health. She is also grateful to her mom who has been there for her as well.
