Indiana House lawmakers overwhelmingly voted to advance legislation, supported by State Rep. Chuck Goodrich (R-Noblesville), to ensure Hoosiers’ voices are heard at school board meetings.
Goodrich said House Bill 1130, which now goes to the Senate for consideration, would require school boards to allow time for public comment from those physically present at a meeting. He said school boards could set a time limit of three minutes or more and take reasonable steps to maintain order in meetings, like removing a disruptive person.

“Hoosier parents who attend school board meetings have the right to express their opinions, just as they do in city council hearings and state legislative committee meetings,” Goodrich said. “As our elected school boards make important decisions that impact our students and communities, parents’ questions and concerns deserve answers and consideration.”
The Indiana Association of Public School Superintendents and the Indiana School Boards Association both stated their support for the bill.
