Dear Editor:

Referendum?

It’s not a bad word. Google it. Go ahead. Or how about I do it for you:

Referendum: “Submission of an issue of public importance to the direct vote of the electorate.”

Simple stuff really, but some people seem unsure, frightened, or simply uninformed about the referendum Sheridan residents must vote on in the upcoming midterm elections.

As president of The Blackhawk Alumni Club and founder of The Blackhawk Sports Report, I spend a lot of time in and around SCS and I tell you the positive vibe coming out of there is simply captivating.

Every teacher I have met and work with exudes genuine pride in what they do, and the programs and opportunities offered to students today are off the charts, especially compared to 1977, the year I graduated.

I’m not qualified to go into deep detail about referendums, but people that I know, and that I trust, guaranteed me that a positive vote on the referendum is simply refinancing the 25 cents referendum approved by local voters in 2023. And in most cases, property owners are expected to pay less this time around in referendum taxes.

The money’s purpose is 100-percent support for teacher and staff salaries so SCS can retain these people, keep class sizes small, maintain school safety and continue providing  for students the excellence they deserve.

So, I’m taking this opportunity I’ve been offered to plead for Sheridan residents to keep Sheridan Community Schools heading in the right direction.

It’s up to you. Onward Sheridan!
