When Maegan Semesky walked across the stage at graduation this spring, she celebrated more than earning her diploma.

The Fishers High School graduate completed her entire K-12 education without missing a single day of school.

While the accomplishment may sound impossible to some, Semesky said it started with a little luck and eventually became a personal challenge.

“I just got lucky to never really need to miss school,” she said. “Then it became a competition with one of my friends. Once it became a competition, neither of us wanted to miss.”

Even her classmates had a hard time believing it.

When Principal Kyle Goodwin mentioned her perfect attendance during a senior celebration, many students were surprised to learn she had never missed a day.

“Everybody was like, ‘What?’” Semesky recalled with a laugh.

Despite the achievement, Semesky said she wasn’t immune to getting sick. More often than not, she simply managed to avoid illnesses that would have kept her home during the school week.

“I did get sick,” she said. “But usually it happened on Fridays, during the weekend or right before a break.”

Her perfect attendance also continued through the disruptions of the COVID-19 pandemic, including periods of virtual and hybrid learning.

For Semesky, showing up every day was about more than maintaining a streak.

She said one of the things she will miss most about high school is seeing her friends. While at FHS, she took part in several activities and clubs, including yearbook, orchestra, National Honor Society, Key Club, French Club, Baking Club, and photography.

She encourages younger students to get involved once they find their footing.

As she prepares for her next chapter, Semesky credits Hamilton Southeastern Schools for helping her build connections and discover opportunities along the way.

This fall, she will attend the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, where she plans to major in chemistry with an emphasis in biochemistry and pursue a minor in graphic design.

“I feel like HSE Schools prepared me by giving me the connections and resources I needed,” she said. “I’ve made really good friends, and my counselors helped me think about my future and what I wanted to do.”
