The Guerin Catholic girls lacrosse team almost completed a comeback against Bishop Chatard Saturday, May 30 in the INGLA Class 2A state championship game at Zionsville.
The Golden Eagles fought back from a huge deficit to take a late lead before the Trojans scored two goals and won the state title game 15-14.
Chatard led for most of the game, jumping out to a 3-0 lead. Claire Flannagan scored three goals in the first quarter to keep GC in the contest, then Caroline Ford scored to cut the Trojans’ lead to 5-4 before a late goal gave Chatard a 6-4 advantage.
That score was the first of six consecutive goals for the Trojans, who ran their lead up to 11-4 midway through the second quarter. Flannagan went on a run during the last five minutes of the half, scoring three consecutive times to bring her team within 11-7 at halftime.
Flannagan began the third period with another goal. Corinne Karlander scored, then Flannagan found the net again. Suddenly, Guerin Catholic was just one goal down, 11-10.
Chatard stopped GC’s run with a goal midway through the third, but the Golden Eagles twice in the last few minutes of the quarter. Karlander and Camryn Carter put in goals, and the score was tied, 12-12 heading into the fourth.
The Trojans scored the final period’s first goal to lead 13-12. Ford and Flannagan then scored two goals in rapid succession, and Guerin Catholic had its first lead, 14-13, with 5:39 left. But Chatard tied the game with just over three minutes to go, and scored the go-ahead goal with under two minutes left.
Flannagan finished the game with nine goals.
The Golden Eagles completed their season with a 16-5 record.
