Hamilton County qualifies many athletes to state meet
The REPORTER
The Carmel girls track & field team defended its championship Tuesday at the Lafayette Jefferson regional.
The Greyhounds scored 116 points, winning four events and qualifying numerous athletes to the IHSAA state finals, which take place Saturday, June 5 at North Central.
Carmel’s individual victories all came from their distance runners. The Greyhounds began the meet with a win in the 4×800 relay. Sadie Foley won the 1600 run and finished second in the 800 run to her teammate Kaitlyn Oshimura. Annabel Pollert won the 3200 run.
Hamilton Southeastern totaled 78 points to place second. The Royals won the most individual events with five, including the 4×100 and 4×400 relays.
Kaleah McCarter zoomed to victory in the 100 dash, while Anissa Lammie won the 400 dash. Chloe Senefeld won a very fast 300 hurdles race; in fact the top six finishers in that event all ran under the state standard, which automatically qualifies them for the state meet.
Other county winners included Noblesville’s Ainsley Meinerding, who claimed the long jump. Her teammate Rylan Bell gave the Millers a 1-2 finish in that event. Meindering qualified for state in three individual events, also taking second in both the 100 dash and 200 dash.
Fishers’ Zinnia Pineda won the 200 dash, while Mia Tobias qualified for state in both the shot put (second place) and discus (third place).
Guerin Catholic’s Amelia Smith finished first in the pole vault.
Westfield’s Katelyn Eblen advanced to state in both hurdles events, while Hamilton Heights’ Waverly Woolever qualified in the 300 hurdles and the high jump.
